USB port speeds??

Running Vista Ultimate, fully patched. Today I get a system(?) message that tells me "This device can perform faster" and "Your USB Mass Storage Device can perform faster if it is plugged into a hi-speed USB port"
Then it enumerates the Intel(R) ICH8 Family USB2 Enhanced Host Controller 2836 (6 ports) and the same thing but numbered 283A and 4 ports.

This is queer, since the device (an external hard drive) has bene used over months with no change. Right now it is plugged into the right side lower USB slot, where it has been before.

Anyone have any idea what this is all about?

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but have you looked at this thread? http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=42200

Thanks, Ron. If I had to condense that thread down to one line I would say "Reinstall drivers it may be a driver issue".

Well, yeah.<G>

I'm reasonably currently patched and haven't seen any other USB issues, the behavior of the system not seeing the correct speed for the USB port seemed like it might be more specific to something. If I comes back again, maybe I'll look at driver updates or refreshes "just in case".

If I could just get my slide rule hooked up to the Internet, so I had a RELIABLE computer to use on the web.<G>
