New 320GB scorpio: Newb odysey
Thinkpad folks,
Long time fan of thinkpads first time tinkerer. I have purchased at 320GB WD scorpio for installation in my T60p. I've tried the True image and Migrate easy routes without success. My question to the community is as follows:
If I install the 320GB HDD can I just load my rescue and recovery media to produce an out-of-the-box thinkpad? I'll recover my documents through my Vista backup and restore.
Thanks.

Welcome to the forum!
There is much written on this very topic.
The short answer is yes you can.
How have you attempted and failed? Having this information will allow a much better diagnosis.
One quick suggestion is to have the target (new) drive installed in your T60p and your old (source) drive outside the T60p.

Re: New 320GB scorpio: Newb odysey
Allan, I just upgraded (again) to a couple of seagate 320 GB / 7200rpm drives on my T61p. Instead of using True Image Workstation to backup and then restore, I purchased ME from Acronis, put the new drive in the ultrabay and was done in a few minutes. I'm sure others have done the same. Was there something we can help you with to try again? I think it is the easiest method to upgrade (provided you have a way to connect the spare drive).allan.debono wrote: I've tried the True image and Migrate easy routes without success.

HD upgrade
I hear some people say the Hitachi runs hotter than the Seagate. Opinions?

Re: HD upgrade
I can't say but I can tell you that the palm rest never gets as warm as the left side (its that cool). Also, the Seagate 200GB 7K drive that replaced the original Hitachi was 'completely' silent. The new 320GB drive is not quite silent but still quieter than the 'sqeaking' that the Hitachi had. This is just my opinion of course and YMMV but I also was looking for a drive that had hardware 'G' sensor support (I prefer not to use software solution for this). In addition, the new seagate 320GBs have 5 year warranties. I have several (i.e. 20) VM's plus data and still wanted plenty of space free. I've been waiting 6 months for these drives to hit the market since they were announced at the start of the year. They are a perfect solution for me.stephenaron wrote:I hear some people say the Hitachi runs hotter than the Seagate. Opinions?

Keep away from the hitachi 320GB 7200rpm. It's the worst !!! Much heat, poor access time and transfer rate.
Seagate Momentus 7200.3 and Western Digital Scorpio Black are far better performer and run cooler. I send back the Scoprio black and switch for Momentus 7200.3 witch is more silent.

Toms Hardware has a nice comparison of the new 7200 rpm drives. I can't wait for the 7200.3 seagates to be back in stock. Will be picking one up post haste.
