T61 Multiple Hard Drive Failures on Windows Vista

#1 Post by cootified » Mon Sep 01, 2008 11:09 pm

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a T61, 6459-E6M back in June and already I had to replace the hard drive twice!

The first time the HDD failed after just about 10 days of delivery. The computer froze and the BIOS HDD Diagnostic check confirmed it was dead...

The second time the same thing happened, but this time the BIOS HDD Diagnostics failed to even start before ending in "Verification failure".

Anyone with any suggestion on how this may not be a coincidence?

A colleuge suggested that Windows Vista may be the culprit?

For full specs of my machine click here.
Regards,
YD

While it is true that a HDD will run a bit more with Vista, especially at first while it indexes and sets up SuperFetch, complete failure like that is hard to accept.

I have 5 ThinkPads running Vista and they get a workout when in use, and there has never been a drive failure like that.

It's possible that you just had some bad luck....well, that's an idea, anyway.

Hey thanks,

yeah I didn't think it was windows vista causing the fatal errors but, it is a possibility.

my colleuge reckons I should run XP on it for a while just to prove it.

looks like it may be just coincidental or another system component causing the hdd to fail...hmm
monitor this i will...

There's no way that Vista, in and of itself, killed your hard drive. If it died under Vista, it would have died under XP.

Sounds like you're just the victim of bad luck.

I agree - Vista as an OS cannot kill hardware.

I don't see how your poll is relevant to the thread. And it doesn't even cover all the options.
