Hi,

i've decided after long time to upgrade power manager utility. So downloaded and installed ThinkPad Power Management Driver (1.40 -> 1.50) and Power Manager (1.13c -> 1.43).
then problems appeared:
- the Wireless Radio / Bluetooth properties black window is displayed (as after hitting Fn+F5) when Power Manager = battery gauge is starting. the same screen is shown temporarily when i double-click the battery gauge and then after few seconds Power Manager window appears
- Fn + F3 hotkey displays Wireless Radio / Bluetooth properties black window and just then works as expected from Fn + F3
- Fn + F5 hotkey switches on and off Bluetooth device

i've tried to sort this out by installing latest HOTKEY package (2.08.2008) but it didn't solve anything.

so my question is - does anybody know what i did wrong or if above packages require upgrade of another packages or BIOS?
didn't see any note of such requirements in installation steps.

T60 - 2007_FSG / BIOS ver. 1.11 / WinXP SP2

in a post i can't pin down right now, i recall references to a lenovo system interface driver that solved some hotkey-related problems. you may want to look into it.

thank you for suggestion, sarbin, but isn't that just for Vista issues. Don't see previous version of system interface driver installed on my system.

Is there any source when i could check drivers dependancies?

i made some more observations on this

i installed ThinkVantage Productivity Center & Productivity Center Supplement for ThinkPad v 3.00 and then removed Power Management Driver, Power Manager and Hotkey package and installed them again.
this brought small improvement:
Fn + hotkeys work oke now however Fn+F5 window appears for approx 10 seconds each time i make something related to Power Manager (on WinXP startup, when Fn+F3 is pressed, when i double-click battery gauge). after 10 seconds the black window with Location Profile and Wireless Radio tabs is gone and system works as expected.

also spotted in Task Manager that AcFnF5.exe process is started and running and cannot be killed (nothing happens if i try to do so). also firewall (comodo) reports that PWMIDTSK.EXE is starting AcFnF5.exe here and there without any intervention from my side. so then i can see multiple AcFnF5.exe processes started but not using any resources.

now thinking about the BIOS update and maybe also Access Connections but i'm not very keen to do that because my Wireless connection works oke and is playing well with my router and i think Access Connections will require also wireless driver upgrade.

any thoughts, ideas, links?

minor update on above:

did BIOS upgrade (1.11 -> 2.22) last night but it didn't changed anything, unfortunatelly

one more attempt:

i've uninstalled ThinkPad Power Management Driver, Power Manager and HOTKEY packages and then let System Update do the installation instead of me (thinking the order in which these are installed can be important)
resulted in the same behaviour as if i did it myself

nobody else has this problem (above) ?

If you are using Access Connections V5.0.1 or V5.0.2 there are known problems with the GUI and error codes. Uninstall it and get V4.52, which was on the Lenovo website a few days ago.

I had similar power management issues after upgrading the power managet a couple months ago. My fn+F5 just turned on and off bluetooth and the display never came on. After uninstalling all the stuff and using system update to get all of the new stuff yesterday, it all works fine. Vista and T60P.

Do you have the latest power manager, system interface, etc as of 10/1? I am pretty sure this is a very recent update. There is also a windows Vista update for power mangement you can get from the system update. Make sure you get that from the reccomended upgrades.

Good luck, the ThinkVantage stuff seems to get buggier and buggier each year.

coincidentally, I could reproduce similar of your problem yesterday as I tried to install the new Vista-like Lenovo Power Manager: Fn + F3 didn´t work at all, Fn + F5 only switched bluetooth on and off. I was lucky and could resolve this problem in the following way (I don´t use AC though):
1. Uninstall the Power Manager, Power Management driver, onscreen display and Lenovo System Interface driver and in your case probably also AC (and reboot when prompted).
2. Install your "old working" System Interface Driver , then the "old working" onscreen display, then the "old working" Power Management driver, then the "old working" AC, then the new Power Manager (and always rebooted when requested).
I believe this should fix your problem

Thank you for your suggestion.
I uninstalled Power Manager, Power Management Driver, Hotkey package. My system came with no System Interface Driver installed.
Then I installed "old working" Hotkey package, then "old working" Power Management Driver and finally new Power Manager
This resulted in the same behaviour as described above. So seems there's something wrong with new Power Manager 1.43

I tried to install System Interface Driver before this reinstall but it didn't really solve anything.

I hope there will be some fix to this soon

Also tried to double-click battery gauge (which should normally open Power Manager window) while having Process Explorer (Sysinternals) opened to see which processes are starting. What happened was

1. rundll32.exe was started
2. AcFnF5.exe was started (here black FnF5 = Location profile / Wireless radio window appears)
3. AcFnF5.exe was ended
4. Power Manager window appears

thank you Kaz, tried PM 1.45 last night - but the same symptoms as before.

but then i noted AC letters in the beggining of the process name (AcFnF5.exe) that is run each time i double-click the battery gauge and realized that it belongs to Access Connections.
So uninstalled Access Connections and wireless card driver. installed newer version of wireless driver (11.05.0 for Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection in my case) and then Access Connections (4.52) and result is - it works flawlessly - no black windows, no delays. yay!!!
just one more note: check instructions for Access Connections to find the wireless driver that plays well with it. it can be necessary also upgrade power management thingy and hotkey package
