BSOD when exiting standby or hibernate, possible hangs too

#1 Post by tpribors » Thu Sep 18, 2008 8:04 am

Some recent update is causing a BSOD whenever I turn the system on after being in standby (Fn+F4) or hibernate (Fn+F12). The system does have to be down for a while - it happens every morning after an overnight power down, but doesn't if I just go down and come back up.

I also noticed a set of just hangs when the system was sitting idle for a while and found that if I went to battery and back to AC that it would unfreeze.

Has anyone seen this?

The IBM service number no longer handles software related calls - only hardware.

Yesterday I reinstalled windows from scratch, and last night started applying the Thinkpad updates. Usually when this happens it is because of an update over update, so by starting over you get only the latest updates applied to the original factory software.

Well, my BSODs are back now...

Any ideas here?

It seems that IBM no longer deals with Lenovo software issues. There is obviously some driver that is not compatible with the existing system.

Once again it looks like the video driver. I picked up 8.442 because in the past I'd deleted the ATI utility and I needed to adjust contrast/gamma/intensity. I was running 8.362 before because I'd bagged 8.383 before due to a sleep/standby problem.

I went back to 8.362 (which I found by digging around on my hard drive) and it seems much more stable now.

I tried to install the driver from AMD/ATI directly but it won't install.

It's most definitely the video driver 8.442.*. I restored from the drive from the restore partition (a really old one without the selective restore that lets you delete certain junk).

This is with SP2, so before anything I did:

1. Install SP3.

2. Let Windows Update catch up.

3. Let Software Update catch up, except exclude video driver 8.442. The video driver is currently at 8.204 which is wat came with the T60p from the factory. I suppressed the video driver and everything is now perfect.

4. Install all apps and update them.

Anyway, I was suffering from Windows Rot.

Everything has been running since noon. I'm going to let it be. I accepted everything from Lenovo except the video driver. 8.362 also worked on my previous system but it is not available from Lenovo any more (What happened, IBM used to keep old updates around to revert).

Windows offers me a video driver but since it doesn't say what version I'll reject Bill's offer and put it in quarantine.

Now comes for the tedious task of merging my old files with the new system. Things like bookmarks, etc.

The great thing is that the system is totally much more responsive.

Now I can get the new version of Photoshop and play wity my D700! Finally!
