T8100 on 41W1489 motherboard - will it work
I have a 41W1489 (7663-1TU) motherboard without CPU. Can I put T8100 in it? The original CPU was T7300. What would happen if I do?

Yes, it will work. The 7663-1TU is a T61, and is compatible with the Penryn T8100. I have a T61 with the T8100. Practically any T61 motherboard would accept that processor.
Is your T61 fully functional? Why the decision to swap processor?

T61 with 8100
Well I am just puting together a parted laptop and so far it has not been cooperative. According to Lenovo parts info this particular model number 7663-1TU is not on the list for T8100 CPU so that is where my problem is - I am just not sure that 8100 will work with this particular motherboard. I have another T61 with T8100 but it is next level motherboard and is on the list for T8100 CPU.
If your motherboard use Socket P and not Socket M then this is a possible upgrade.
Socket P support
Core 2 Duo T5xxx, T7xxx, T8xxx, T9xxx
Pentium Dual T23x0
Intel Celeron M
Socket M supports
Core 2 Duo T5xxx, T7xxx
Core Duo
Intel Core Solo

I just checked. Socket P is not pin-compatible with socket M so I would not even be able to put it in. So the socket is definitely Socket P and both processors are Penryn, so I am not sure. T7300 is 65nm technology and T8100 - 45 nm. Core stepping and CPUID strings are different. I have T7300 on its way so I will check. Thanks anyway.

Found at NBR forums the answer to your question:
- 42W7651,
- 42W7652,
- 42W7872
- 42W7653, and
- 42W7875.
So it looks your planar board is not listed on the list, so probably it will yield you a boot error when you install the processor, read the source below:

My T61 equipped with a T8100 has a 42W7872 FRU for the planar board. Check your laptop and see if you have on of the following planars:Ive done some research since my post.
the ability to run a penryn based T8xxx or T9xxx CPU on your T61/p will depend on your motherboard and doesn't have anything to do with the BIOS.
to start go to the IBM warranty page here http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...LOOK-WARNTY#sw and enter your type and serial number.
You'll then get a page detailing each component in your system with a FRU number.
Scroll down and look for 'SYSTEM PLANAR'. Mine states 42W7652 as the FRU.
From my reviews of what people have got to work on their systems and the maintenance manual I've concluded the following.
Merom based T7xxx CPU's will work on the following motherboards
- 42W7651,
- 42W7652,
- 42W7653, and
- 42W7875.
Penyrn based T8xxx and T9xxx CPU's will work on the following motherboards
- 42W7876, and
- 42W7877.
I hope this helps.
