T61 not recognizing CD/DVD

#1 Post by davidaker » Mon Sep 22, 2008 4:50 pm

I just picked up a T61 (8892 02U) 5 months old. It does not recognize the optical drive at all (same with Bluetooth). The guy I bought it from did say that the CD was intermittent. So far it doesn't see it. Anyone else had this problem?

I have a T61p and it recognizes the DVD Writer just fine. Did you check to see if it shows up in Device Manager? And is the driver for installed? It all should have been if you are using the Preload.

With respect to Bluetooth, I purchased (and returned) a LogiTech V470 Bluetooth mouse that would not connect to my Bluetooth. The LogiTech software would not install properly, so I put it down to Vista incompatability.

Then I saw a post here that someone's Microsoft Bluetooth mouse was not recognized.

Can anyone comment on T6x Bluetooth / Vista as to whether it works or not?

The CD/DVD doesn't show up in the device manager although if I insert a CD, it does spin and the LED on the writer does flash but I guess that means that it is getting power, then nothing. Also with PC-Doctor or My Computer, it does not recognize a DVD writer being there.

It looks like a hardware problem based on what you say here. It should show up in Device Manager, and if it were alive, then, it should show as New Hardware on startup. ... JDH

I don't know if you found a fix for this, but I think I experience the same thing, or at least the symptom that the guy that gave it to you described.

9 times out of 10, I can put a CD or DVD into my T60p, and Windows does not recognize it. It spins up, the D drive shows as normal in Windows (but never changes the icon to show that there's something in the drive), but I can't read the disc. The drive is in Device Manager always, there are no errors in Event Viewer. I can double click the drive and it opens, but there are no files in it.

I thought I fixed it awhile back by stumbling on some Windows KB article with a registry fix, but apparently not. If I put the disc in, reboot, it works just fine.

It frustrates me, and it doesn't help that I don't even know what/how to search for what's happening - searching for "cd or dvd drive doesn't work" or doesn't read discs is usually worthless!

Anyway, if you found a fix, let me know - thanks!

The T61 was under warranty and I took it in. Apparently the connector where the drive slides into was defective. It was replaced and now my drive works.
