Is this normal for Samsung TFTs?

Hi,

I have a T60 with a XGA LCD (Samsung LTN141XA-L01).

The thing is that is seems this is not a 32-bit LCD because I can see the dithering on smooth color fades.

I can also see some small colorful dots around ClearType fonts. The edges of such fonts usualy have some red traces on the sides if they are in black.

I had a T41 before (not sure what LCD, XGA thou) and I don't remember having any of these problems.

Is this normal?

The strange thing is that ThinkWiki lists this LCD as a T40/T41/R5x one (not a T60 one). Would this mean that it has been switched by the previous owner?

As I will be upgrading to an SXGA+ LCD soon, should I avoid some models to ensure that I get a panel with full 32 bit colors support?

TIA,
yak

Could be. But not necessarily. Lenovo is known to put in other/older parts if they run out of original parts. If you haven't done so, you can look up here with what parts your machine came originally.

The panel is 18 bit: 3 colors@6 bits per color - not 32 bit. Most notebook panels have 6 bits per color. I just checked LG-Philips' offering. They have two panels with 8 bits per color, one is a 17" wide panel and the other one is a 20" wide panel, all their other notebook panels have 6 bits per color. My overview of Samsung notebook panels contains only 6-bit panels.

I also get red halos around clear type fonts in some applications.

I don't believe there is real 8 bit notebook panel. All TN panels are 6 bit only and I doubt there are any non-TN based notebook displays these days regardless its size.

Samsung made the worst panels. I got one of their B$ within my T61p. It was a nightmare : diethering, poor colors, grey black, snowy/grainy white, poor contrast and so on. I have never ever see a so poor panel (except passive TN) !!!

I buy a LG/Philips WUXGA 15.4'' and get the oringal Samsung out.

I wonder how Lenovo or any other manufacturer can use such panels. And btw how samsung dares to sell them !!!

Thanks guys for your replies. Much appreciated.

Now I see on the ThinkWiki that there are XGA Samsungs in T60, the page just doesn't list the model number.

I would add it if I was sure.

I'll try to stay away from Samsung while looking for a SXGA+ panel.

Anyone having one to sell or wanting to exchange for an almost unused XGA panel (not a single mark on the surface), please PM me.
