Yes I was wondering what it is that controls what the view shows up for the fn key. What I'm talking about is when you hit fn + F5 or F8 it should come up with another screen showing you different options. I had to get my laptop taken into the IT department at my school to get it fixed and they said they disabled some services and after that the screens never came up again although different fn combinations work just fine.

You are most probably missing some Lenovo software. Get
System Update (if you don't already have it) and use it to find out what you are missing. The tool will then download and install the software components.

Add the Lenovo software as was suggested. Also, you do not need to disable too many services to make the machine run properly.

I installed the software update and it fixed one of the functions but the mute and sound buttons still wont work properly.

Who worked on the machine?
I am curious if it was some punk kid, or someone with experience.
Did they tell you what services they disabled, and why?
I ask only because IME schools are great for breaking computers as they don't have the budget (usually) to hire qualified technicians or IT admins.
Hope you get it sorted out quickly and amicably.

Yes they are trained IT guys because I'm going to a Computer Science school, but they didn't tell me what they disabled.

Sounds like you need the OnScreen Display driver.

How would I install or get the OnScreen Driver so I could try it out and see if it works.

I fail to see the connection.

What I meant is that I'm going to one of the top schools for Computer Science and whats the point there if they don't have IT guys who don't know what they are doing considering everyone in the school has a laptop provided by the school.

To solve your mute and sound onscreen problem: download Lenovo Interface Driver from Lenovo site and (re)install it. Then download the onscreen display driver from the same place and (re)install it. This should fix your problem. It´s not a bad idea to reboot after that. You can find them
here.
Good luck

In my experience (I'm currently in a MS CS program) "Computer Science" and "Information Technology" are vastly different disciplines. Sort of a theoretical vs. practical divide, but even worse than in music (I have a BA in music). But a month or two into the semester, maybe you've noticed this by now... this may be what dr_st was hinting at.
