T61 bios v 2.21 dated 7/1/08??

#1 Post by davidaker » Sun Sep 28, 2008 8:05 am

I recently purchased a 5 month old T61 and I see that bios version 2.21 (7LETC1WW) 1.08 is installed. When I look at the Levono website, it shows 2.20 is the latest version. The laptop works great with the exception of not recognizing an optical drive -- I've swapped the drive out with a known good one and still the optical drive is not seen. Anyone have any ideas please?

Seems like a software problem. Try booting from the CD/DVD drive. You can use a windows installation CD or live Linux CD for example or any other bootable disc.

Does it show up in the device manager?

No, the CD/DVD does not show up in the device manager. When I click on My Computer, it does have Drive D: CD but if I insert a CD or DVD, the drive whirs but when I click explore or open, I get the response, please insert disc in drive d:. I've tried putting the drive at the top of the boot list in the bios and inserting a bootable CD but it passes and boots on the HD. It's under warranty so I'm going to take it in although I'm not the original owner. Hopefully it'll be covered.

Assuming you have a good bootable CD, if you hit F12 on startup to bring up the boot device option screen and select the CD as the boot device, will it boot from it. If not, it seems to me you have a hardware/bios problem (though it does seem like the BIOS is aware of the drive which leads me to think hardware).
