T61: replace SXGA with XGA screen ?

#1 Post by Sydney » Sun Sep 28, 2008 1:32 pm

Hi, would anyone know if it is possible to replace a 14" SXGA-screen with a 14" XGA in a T61 (with either Intel x3100 or nVidia NVS 140M) ? If yes, is there anything I need to know about the replacement ?
Thanks so much,
Sydney.

Whether you are talking about widescreen models or traditional screens, the switch is straightforward. You just need to swap the panel.

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to lower the resolution of your laptop?

I second that question. Well, there is a program called LiquidView, and it works great. You know how the screen looks all washed out if you don't run your system at the native, i.e. highest resolution? This application LiquidView does away with that, and very effectively so! I've tried it on a past Thinkpad, just for kicks. I also had an SXGA+ screen at the time, so when I chose 1024x768 for XGA, and 640x480 for VGA, the screen remained super sharp.

Hope that helps! ;)

Thanks so much guys and sorry for the delay in answering.

@ richk: I was glad to hear that it IS possible to replace the screen, cause I had heard otherwise. But supposedly people just shy away from the "work-intense" exchange (as they put it). After lots of research I have in fact found someone who has got the screens and will do the swap for a reasonable charge, so all is sweet.

@ Temetka: SXGA is just too tiny for me. I work in a darkened environment with relatively dark screen settings and need to be able to spend long-hours in front of the monitor - at a reasonable distance.

@ Crunch: What an awesome idea !! Except that the program seems to be pretty outdated by now. Last entries found through Google are at least a couple of years old.... so shying away from that option a bit. And the screen exchange would only be about twice as much as the cost of the program. So I'll just go for the swap.

Thanks again so much for taking the time to answer, everyone !!
Syd.
