T61 Mute Button Question

#1 Post by agarza » Wed Oct 01, 2008 11:21 pm

Would it be possible to change the behavior of the Mute key on my T61. Old Thinkpad I had in the past the mute key would ONLY Mute, but with my new T61 the sound would unmute if I press twice the key. Is there a fix to have the old 'IBM' behavior?

+1

I would love to know if there's a way to reassign those buttons in general.

Yeah, buy a T60.

But seriously, the behavior of the sound keys has changed drastically in the T61 series compared to previous models, not only in the mute thing. Basically, in the older models the keys communicated with a proprietary chip on the board (through the BIOS), and controlled the volume directly.

In the T61 this chip was removed, so the keys now communicate with the OS volume through the sound driver.

Which means - they don't function without the driver, they don't function before the OS driver is loaded, they don't work unless you have a driver (DOS/Linux/MacOS).

So there you go - yet another thing crippled in the T61 compared to previous models. :(

You're right dr_st, in fact when loading San Andreas if I try to lower the sound it would not let me until the main screen is shown and the green bar is shown below.
