After doing a recent Lenovo update, when I try to play a movie in my DVD drive, the movie starts and after about five seconds it stops and give me the message, "Playback Stopped. Copy Protection Signal is Detected." This is when playing it through InterVideo WinDVD. If I try to play the DVD through Windows Media Player I get a movie that plays but no sound at all. Does anyone have any ideas out here?

I had a related problem. I upgraded to Vista on my T60, and InterVideo was gone. When I bought an ultrabase for my X61, it didn't come with any DVD playback software.
The solution to both problems was to install the k-lite codec package, which is free. No problems anymore.

Maybe this is not the solution you were looking for, but it works. I hope this helps.

This is the DRM crap inside Vista and will often trigger for no valid reason.

Is usually caused by dll mismatches (codecs etc) or when you update your driver (a common problem for my when updating to the newest nVidia drivers).

Get the K-Lite pack, works best and you have any missing codecs you can get them individually or install the Mega Codec Pack (this pack is a bit over the top but has everything).

Unfortunately, it is not only Vista. See the second thread I linked above and you'll see that XP isn't much better either.

I don’t know much about WinDVD as a player, but if you do decide to use Windows Media Player and are having “video but no audio” kinds of problems, then odds are (like most folks in here said) there’s some kind of codec issue going on.

This site, http://www.wmplugins.com/ , is a pretty decent place to begin a Windows Media Player codec search, if you do make the decision to download them manually. I hope it’s helpful.

Well, as for WMP and codes one can always install the k-lite codec pack and forget about any issues with video, audio or subtitles, so why to bother every time searching for the appropriate codec

I don´t have Intervideo WinDVD. I play my DVDs using Windows Media Player and it runs fine (provided one has the k-lite codec pack installed, of course). Maybe, you should also try WMP instead of WinDVD as a player now when you have the k-lite codec pack installed too.

WMP is a bit of a memory hog. The most widely used bug-free player is VLC from www.videolan.org It can play things that most other players can't, or can do it better. (even partial files)

I know the OP didn't say he was looking to use anything but WinDVD, but I'd take VLC over WMP given the choice. (Although I have both)

I know I am repeating myself, but if you read through the threads I linked to in one of my earlier posts you will find the exact cause of the problem. (Hint: the problem is that you updated to a new version of WinDVD.)

I second the suggestion of Radioguy about VLC The 0.8.6i version didn´t properly work for me with the DVD menu (actually, didn´t work at all with it), and the 0.9.2 version has an annoying bug that the menu constantly shows up while in full screen mode... But the new release also looks more Vista-like, which is probably the coolest thing for many Vista folks anyway , and more importantly, the keyboard shortcuts now work even under Vista...I guess I went a bit off topic

PS: Does anybody else experience the same annoying bug with VLC 0.9.2 or I have to assume that I have bad luck? Also, can the new release properly handle DVD menus?

Marin85, I love 0.9.4 too. I can see how the new features are more enticing to WMP or QT users as well.
