I normally hibernate my computer, but why does it take so long to shut down or boot up? Restards often take me 7-9 minutes. Startups take anywhere from 3:30-5 minutes.
I am aware that Vista is known for slow boot times, but mine are nuts!
I have a t61p spec'ed out thusly:
Core 2 Duo T7800 2.60 GHz
4 GB RAM
160 gb 7200 RPM hd
NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M
15.4" WUXGA screen
I run the screen at 1920 x 1200
Task Manager indicates that I typically use anywhere from 1.2 to 1.8 gigs of memory. I run the hard disk with about 16 gigs free.
Through Power Manager, I've got the laptop set to run at high performance both on and off battery. I've gotten rid of a few extraneous processes from startup under MSConfig.
Why is it taking me so long to boot into Vista (32 bit)? Can anybody tell me how to speed this up? I just bought my parents a 2.4 GHz Core 2 duo Dell desktop with 2 gigs of ram and a similar HD that boots way, WAY faster into Vista.
Are there processes I can get rid of? Some unnecessary program that really slows down the startup? Services I can stop?
It's really annoying to have bought a new computer that takes longer to boot than did mine from 8 years ago.
Horribly slow Vista boot time on a well-spec'ed t61p. Help!

Your hardware specs look quite good, and a cold boot ought to take a little more than a minute, even with Vista.pnklytnyng wrote: I am aware that Vista is known for slow boot times, but mine are nuts!

Have you run CHKDSK to see if there are cross-linked files, etc?
Do you have any other drives connected, like a USB external drive?
My solution to this would be format the drive and reinstall everything and see if that cures the problem.
That's a little bit of work, but if you have a copy of Vista or even XP, it might be worth trying and see how fast boot times are after a fresh install.
Read XP boot times and How to make Vista boot faster. Even though you run Vista, I suggest you to read both threads carefully, then post back
