t60p VPN woes on Vista

I am attempting to connect to my university's VPN on my T60p running Windows Vista business. My computer is up to date from Thinkvantage Update and Windows update.
The university offers a "client" download exe, which I have used in the past under XP to establish a way to connect to the university's PPTP VPN network.
Problem #1: The exe under Vista basically stops installing halfway through. You can see a window of the exe "transferring" files, and then it just stops. Creates no icon, no program folders, just stops halway through. What gives?
So I try to set this up manually by connecting with Vista's network connections to the VPN network manually. I have the guy at a computer site type in the VPN address. I type in my correct username and password.
Problem 2: Vista then does the following: Attempts to connect (Even if you ask it not to connect, to just set it up). It fails to connect. If you attempt to reconnect, it hangs up, just keeps trying to connect without end for over 10 minutes before I give up. If you attempt just to save the connection for later, the wizard simply closes without saving anything, acting as if nothing has happened. If I attempt to diagnose why this is happening, pressing the "diagnose" button responds by doing absolutely nothing (yes, the services are on. it simply does NOTHING!)
I am really at my wits end because in both circumstances I am doing exactly what I should be udoing, and have done in the past, yet experiencing these results which really make absolutely no sense. What is making this exe stop halfway through and crash? (This client exe is made availible to 15,000 people. If there was a general "vista" problem with it, I would have known.) What makes my network not want to connect, and even if it can't connect, why in God's name will Vista not SAVE my connection!
Can someone please help me end this insanity?
