Can someone confirm that the hitachi 7K320 will have no conflict with APS on my t60 I want to order a 320GB Drive today. Or should I be considering another similar drive.

I don't think there will be issues, go ahead and buy it. I'm in the process of getting a 5K320, I want my T61 quiet and dead silent.

At 9.5mm is that a close fit. I have a T61p and wanted to upgrade but I thought that 9mm was the largest you could go. Is that a True statement?

I have a T61 (type 7658).

Could this HD be placed directly in my laptop (once the old drive is removed of course)?

No additional parts or accessories needed?

TIA!

Yes, just need to swap it into the bay, or order a new hard drive caddy(See ad at the top).

well I confirmed that the Fujitsu HD that is currently in my machine is 9.5mm so the Hitachi should fit just fine. I also looked for 9mm hd's but could find no reference to them anywhere. Other than people in forums saying that you need one for your laptop.

I think the confusion about 9 mm vs. 9.5 mm HDs stems from the fact that some people are just lazy and some (other) people have no clue about the metric system. The lazy folks just say/write 9 mm if they refer to the 9.5 mm drives (I for one belong to the lazy people when it comes to 15" LCDs - I usually refer to an 15" WUXGA screen, even if it technically is a 15.4" WUXGA screen). The metric-system challenged folks think that half a millimeter is as big a difference as half an inch would make when in reality it is less than one twentieth that difference.

I'll confirm that my WD works with HDAPS too, actually installed Vista JUST for testing it to see if I can get it working with Linux.

Well every one. I will confirm that the Hitachi 7K320 fits and it works with APS!!! Which also substantially confirms that a 9.5mm drive fits in a T60. I am still not sure that there is such beast as a 9mm since the only reference I have seen is in forums... I am glad. I went from 27gb free to 227gb free. I am totally stoked. It seems to boot faster. But primarily it is soooo much bigger.

I'm thinking about getting a 7k320 myself. Folks here say it works with the APS - how does one actually test that? From the other threads here, sounds like APS can be a bit complicated, making sure to unload heads before flushing data, etc. I don't understand all of what is going on there. But, just because the icon is changing color, or because the video stops - not sure if that means APS is necessarily working correctly, right? If the drive doesn't implement certain ATA commands (Ramp Load/Unload technology?), it might not be doing it correctly, no?

If anyone can clarify this muddy issue for me, I'd be eternally grateful. I'd love to get the 7k320 in my t400, knowing it was working properly.

thanks,
allie

Hey I can confirm that the 7K320 does indeed work with the APS. So this drive should work in your T400.

This issue has been discussed previously here.
In that thread, Quagmyre detailed instructions (about midway through) on how to determine if APS is indeed working/supported. At the end of that thread I followed his instructions and tested it myself, and I can confirm that the Hitachi 7k320 drives do support all features required for APS to function. It's a relatively simple procedure, so you may want to try it out yourself if you want to make sure.

Just a tip. You can provide a link to any post, not just to the thread. Just right-click on the little "file" icon next to the post date/time and choose "Copy link to clipboard" (or similar).

Here's the link to the exact post you were referring to:

lol, in all my years I thought that was one feature phpBB lacked. That icon is so freaking small, I have never thought to click it.
Thanks for the tip!
