If you have a 160 gig HD...could you help me out please?

I've got a T61 with the 160 gig hd.

I've never really payed much attention to "available" space etc.

Today I installed Ubuntu and allocated it 15gigs. I didn't like the way it was working. so I just did a "Rescue and Recovery" and went back to a backup I had made this morning. The Rescue and Recovery worked very well and was quick......quite impressive.

Now, when I click on "My Computer" and click on my C:...it shows the total size being 142 gigs.

Is 142 gigs the correct size?

I know that an advertised 160 gig drive really works out to about 152 gigs based the byte conversion.

So why is my drive only showing 142 gigs of total space? Is it because I still have an Ubuntu partition on my drive that I can't see....or is it because the Thinkvantage software has some space on a hidden partition somewhere?

What does your drive show for available space when you click on my computer?

Is there a way for me to see what kinds of partitions I have on my machine?

Thanks
James

xp or vista? if xp... right click "my computer", select "manage" and then "disk management". that should show any partitions visible to xp, including the recovery hpa/predesktop-type area.

btw, my calc shows a 160 gigabyte drive as: 160,000,000,000 / 1024^3 = 149.012GB.[/quote]

You may have hidden Rescue & Recovery backups taking up the missing space - see e.g. the thread Rescue and Recovery.

About the capacity of a 160 GB HDD:

and

... you are actually both correct, as e.g. explained by the Seagate FAQ: Why does my hard drive report less capacity than indicated on the drive's label?. More explanation about these things e.g. in the first, above-mentioned thread.

160gb HD = 149gb usable. The difference is likely the recovery partition.

Thanks for the replies.

I just right clicked on "my computer" and did the disk management setting....and here is the breakdown:

C: 142.34 gigs

SERVICEV001 6.69 gigs

So the total is 149.05 gigs which seems about right. So from the looks of things, Ubuntu looks like it's gone from the HD and there are no other hidden partitions.

Thanks for all of the help!

James
