Format New 320 Hitachi Hard Drive to NTFS

I had an issue with my T60P hard drive and bought a new Hitachi 7K320 hard drive to replace the original HItachi 7K100. I wanted a clean install, so I installed the new drive and used the Thinkpad T60 restore disks to install the operating system.

My problem is that I was never asked whether I wanted to convert the new drive to NTFS, like the original disks do. Now I have the drive restored as a FAT 32 drive. When I tried the covert c:/fs:ntfs it would not run after I inserted the drive volume name.

Is there something I am doing wrong, or does the new disk need to formatted or partitioned before I use the restore disks??

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

What operating system? What name did you try to enter? What was the error message if any? Make sure your operating system is indeed on C:?
