Need to Replace System Board, Bought One, Now Question

#1 Post by motownFILy » Fri Dec 05, 2008 1:15 pm

i got the 4x4 beeps and no POST so i'm pretty darn sure i have to replace my system board. i bought a new one on ebay from a reputable seller. the FRU is 44C3981. i know it comes w/ the ATI Fire GL, but i can't find out any more information about it. lenovo doesn't seem to have published information about it either. the part isn't listed in the Maintenance Manual, but if i just Google it, it's listed by various retailers as a T60 system board. does anybody have any information about this board or at least a general overview of where this one lies in their repertoire? it is an older model? newer? does its place on their system board timeline even matter? i would appreciate any and all information people can provide. thanks much.

First, I will say that the documentation isn't as good since Lenovo bought the business from IBM. The T60 line is not like the T4x line. In the T4x line, all the machines use the same motherboards. The 15" T4x machines use a little board (interposer) to extend the optical port connectors. The first T60 machines (not wide screen) used the same design. The 15" wide screen machines use different motherboards from the non-wide ones. I think the board you bought is for the non-wide models, but I would need to look at the board to be sure. I hope you don't have the wrong shape machine.

well, retailers don't seem to specify anywhere what screen size it's for, so i think i should be ok. i guess i just wanted assurance that they're still going to be all the same chipset. i guess it goes without saying since the T60 were all Napa systems. i can't seem to find a table that explicitly defines and compares system board FRUs so i was just worried if i got one that was limited in some capacity.

Where the t4x extended using a interposer card you will find on the t60 the board is that much longer or shorter...

I did a search on ebay and checked the pics of diff boards available..
So it willbe a physical fitting problem you will face rather than anything else... i reckon.

am i correct in assuming that all other peripherals (wireless card, fingerprint reader, etc.) are separate from the system board? can i take this opportunity to upgrade the wireless card? is there a better one out there that will work?

you guys are incredible.

Wireless card and fingerprint reader are seperate from the systemboard. You can upgrade to any compatible wireless card. Which one does it have today?

Well, the T60 came with a few different WiFi cards, orderable upon purchase. There is no 'basic wifi card'. Generally speaking they came with an Intel 3945abg card, an Atheros 11a/b/g/n, or an Atheros based b/g card. So, it really comes down to whether or not you prefer Atheros over Intel, and whether or not you need wireless 'N' .
Here's a good thread on adding wireless N to a T60.

once again, thanks everybody for the tips and info.

so here's my new problem:
new system board installed - no prob
new cpu - no prob
trying to reset my S/N - problem

i've read this post (http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=12263) front to back and followed it to a T, however i don't seem to be able to access the eeprom on my T60. i get a message saying that the maintenance disk, created from the file i downloaded trough the aforementioned thread, is not a system disk. i even tried older versions of the maintenance disk. my boot order is correct and i hit ESC right when the thinkpad logo comes up. i don't get to any sort of screen that allows me to reprogram my S/N. is there some kind of trick to hitting ESC? i've tried hitting it once, constantly, and holding it down...no avail. :??:

EDIT: uh, ok, nevermind. it all of a sudden decided to work. i had to create the maintenance disk twice w/o exiting the creation program (I.E. when it asked me to create another copy, i chose Y). all done; worked like a charm :santa:
