Advice on Replacing T61p Base Cover

I dropped my T61p and cracked the base cover assembly, FRU 42W3664. This is the bottom part of the chassis (on which the serial number is affixed, along with the windows OS license number sticker, etc.). The unit is one year old and has a three year IBM depot warranty.

Questions:

1. Has anyone tried to replace this part? It can be purchased from several different online retailers, and from IBM for a higher price. However, I am not sure if I can complete the installation properly.

2. If I replace this part, will it void my warranty?

3. Should I attempt the repair myself, send the unit in for depot repair, or look at other options?

Thanks in advance!

I have already dismantle nearly all my Thinkpad. So, possible, yes. Can any one do it ? Not sure. Warranty void ? If you work fine, no... otherwise, yes. This part is a FRU not a CRU. I think the base costs about 50 €.

Ask Lenovo how much will it cost to do it...
