T42 SXGA LCD in a T61?

Both 14.1" SXGA models. I just can't get used to the T61 for some reason - too white. I like the yellowness of the old faithfull.

I have both, and before I even think about opening them up, are there any definitive yeys or neys on the subject? Different connectors? Different mounts in the display shell?

No. Cables are different and I don't believe that you could get it to fit without some serious surgery on the cable itself.

One pin in the wrong spot and there goes your motherboard...

It wouldn't work but not because they use a different connectors or pinputs. The LCD connectors are more standardized than most people think.

The main obstacle here is the way the notebook determines the resolution of the screen. T4x line used different cables for different resolutions. The cable had some wires connected together which could be then detected by the BIOS. The T6x line use a single cable instead for all resolutions. The actual screen is detected by reading its EDID memory. EDID is an EEPROM chip located on the LCD itself. The problem is that T4x screens are lacking this feature. When I still had my T41, I opened the LCD case to check this out and I found missing components on the LCD's PCB. The letters printed next to them clearly stated they were meant for EDID chip.

I should also add that at least in T60, the EDID memory contains some Lenovo specific data which is the main reason why we can't just pop in a generic LCD not coming from Lenovo. I'm not sure if this is still true for T61, I may read somewhere that it isn't.

It may be possible..

Panels in both t4x and t6x are the same type and fitting.
Only obstacle is if the panel you want to put in the t6x has edid stored on a 24c02 chip, most earlier panels do not ..

So its a matter of having a look on the panel itself .. see if it has the chip or checking off the part number of the panel..
