Missing space on HDD (Apart from R&R space) pl help

#1 Post by starlights » Sun Dec 21, 2008 12:42 am

I am a little confused - I have a 60GB HDD with R&R enabled. My C drive shows as 42.9 GB used and 8.47 available (Total space 51.4) .

When i open my C drive and select all the files (including hidden) and check their collective property the total file size (of all the files together) shows as 8.64GBs

Whats taking up the rest of the space???? Could it be some kind of old junk files? If yes, then how can i clean it up?

Thanks in advance for your help
S

First, your 60 GB ("decimal gigabytes") HDD should hold 55.9 GB ("binary gigabytes") - see e.g. Seagate FAQ: Why does my hard drive report less capacity than indicated on the drive's label?. A good portion of this space is taken up by the R&R partition (if you haven't deleted that); probably some 4-6 GB depending on whether you have XP or Vista.

Second, you may have hidden Rescue & Recovery backups taking up the missing space - see e.g. the thread Rescue and Recovery. There are many threads about this on the forum; try Search for "missing space" (and remember to check "Search for all terms") and a bunch of hits show up, incl. Rescue & Recovery Eating space and Where did my HDD space go?.
