Vista Intel IDE driver issue

#1 Post by taolong » Thu Jan 01, 2009 8:44 pm

I have a SATA driver issue with my T60, but can't figure out how to fix it.

I replaced my original Toshiba 100GB hard drive with a new Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320GB hard drive in my T60, and did a clean installation of Vista Ultimate.

After benchmarking with HD Tune, I found out that the burst rate is only 58 MB/sec. Most benchmark result of the same drive posted in this forum is in the range of 120 MB/s. (The transfer rate and seek time look OK.)

I looked at the Info tab of HD Tune, and saw it unable to determine most of the drive parameters. Vista's Device Manager only shows one "IDE Channel" item (for my DVD RW drive) under "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" category.

I then rolled back the "Intel(R) ICH7M/MDH SATA ACHI controller" driver to Vista's Standard SATA driver. After reboot, there were two "IDE Channel" items. One was for my new hard drive, and the other was for the DVD RW drive. HD Tune was able to detect the drive parameters. It shows "UDMA Mode 6" as Supported and "UDMA Mode 2" as Active. I don't quite understand why. Also, the performance under Vista's drive is slightly worse than the Intel driver I got from Lenovo support web site.

I think the problem is related to the Intel IDE driver I installed. Has anyone seen this problem before? Is there a solution?[/img]
