this is a somewhat bizarre question, but a genuine one nonetheless: I recently installed a new palm rest on my T60p-- which I received from Lenovo-- to replace one with a broken inside clip that caused creaking; I've noticed with the new palm rest that merely placing my hands/palms on the surface leaves an impression-- of moisture or heat I guess-- whereas this *never* happened with my previous one, as it never seemed to attract any moisture from the surface of my hands. Now, if I use the machine for any extended period of time, there are quite visible impressions left that need to be wiped away to disappear completely. I like to keep notebook clean, and it's annoying to have the thing look dirty simply by virtue of touching it.

So, either something has radically changed in my internal chemistry, or there is something different about the plastic in this replacement palm rest. Has anyone else experienced this or heard of anything similar, or do I just sound insane?

hmm i might not be perfectly right, but i guess they must have sent u a hand rest of the newer thinkpad series..my guess is that is that they must have mistakenly sent u a hand rest of one of the newer T series or SL series coz i feel they are of the similar size or shape as the older T series..
or even its a rare possibility that they must have sent u a mislabeled hand rest or something like that..

just a thought!!!!!

edit: the newer models seem to take impressions like u have mentioned..atleast thats what i just remembered on my classmates new thinkpad..i quite dont remember which model was it..but am pretty sure it was a new 14" one!!!

I got a t61p last May. I did notice the impressions on the palm rest at first. However, it has disappeared now. I have no idea why. Maybe the impressions are just part of being new?

I have a T40 and a T61. The T61, which I received only recently, clearly gets more sweat/heat imprints. Its actually sort of annoying, and I prefer the T40 quite a bit more just because of this.

I think part of this is simply new plastic versus old. The oils from your skin will eventually saturate the new plastic and you'll probbaly stop leaving impressions. Could be a variation in the plastic, but I'd just polish it up with some ArmorAll or something similar and see if that stopped the problem.

The creaky wrist rests on these machines must be why you don't find them in retail stores, I don't know anyone who'd buy a computer, or keyboard, that creaked this way, if they knew it up front.

Someone at Lenono should have been sentenced to execution over this design mishap.

I have been throught two replacement Palm Rests for my T60 and they both showed the oil / mositure. This, however, went away after about a month or so. I think it's because the replacements are placed into the plastic bags directly after manufacture which may create this chemical reactive to the oil in your fingers. Don't worry, it should clear up after a while.

In the event it continues and is bothersome, contact Lenovo and request a replacement. Let them know that you are not happy with the replacement.......

thanks for the responses, much appreciated-- thought I'd report back: after two different palm rests from Lenovo, both with the same result, I'm concluding that either something in the plastic is indeed different from the one that originally shipped with the system, or as hellosailor remarked, it's a result of the plastic's "newness"; I did, however, compare the part numbers and manufacturing info from the undersides of the palm rests, and everything matches up; I've gone back to my old one for now, as I'd rather have a slight creak than what looks like greasy prints all over the surface-- guess that's the "Danny Tanner" in me, ha.

I would be interested to know, however, for those with T61's or other newer models, if they've found these impressions to recede over time, i.e. with use.
