Did the widescreen T60P come in flexview?

#1 Post by Oliver26n » Thu Jan 22, 2009 6:04 pm

I was looking at this T60P:

http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/sys/1003083761.html

and the owner claims the screen is flexview. I see no mention of this on Lenovo's site when looking up that type. Did the 15.4" widescreen come in IPS?

No. Flexview only came in 4:3, not widescreen.

I don't see in the ad where s/he is claiming Flexview, though...
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

Oh, I asked him specifically if it has flexview, and he said yes. I guess he didn't really know what I was talking about. Too bad. Otherwise, the widescreens are really nice. Thanks for the prompt reply :)

In terms of brightness and contrast widescreens ar still better than those old standard panels. Of course, they cannot mach Flexview but they are not that bad either.

ThinkPad T500 (2242-CTO) P8600 / RAM 4GB / WSXGA+ / HDD Hitachi 7K320 320GB / 6 Cell Sony / Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

It really depends very much on what you understand under "bad". My WUXGA looks really poor compared to a T60p´s IPS UXGA and I can say for sure that it´s not any much brighter than it.

Cheers

Agreed. The T400 I'm trying to unload cannot compare to the T60P's screen; they are worlds apart.

Well, certainly that´s not because of the fact that it´s wide, but because your screen probably has LED backlit. Put LED backlit behind an IPS UXGA panel and it won´t be definitely any dimmer than your T400 screen ;) (Actually, something similar has been already done by Lenovo, namely with the X200t, I yet have to see it in life...)

Cheers

My T400 (yes, LED backlit) seems dimmer than the T60p when both are on full brightness. T60p definitely looks crisper, but probably because of the fine pixel pitch. I had a 2.2ghz LED backlit Macbook Pro a while back, and the screen seemed significantly better than the T400, even though it's supposed to be TN. I've come to the conclusion that while the T400 is very, very fast and sturdy, it offers nothing else to differentiate it from dozens of other laptops.

That can´t be! The LED backlit should make your screen much brighter than a ThinkPad IPS ever was (weaker backlit) :) Are you sure you have set your T400 to max brightness?

Yes, it's at its brightest. I think the T60p can create a more pure white, which makes it seem brighter. Also, it definitely has better contrast. Note that this is after both lcd's were calibrated with a spyder.

Hm, ok, I was actually wondering about the degree of luminance... but not that important. Have you tried to compare them when having darker backgrounds (to exclude more or less the colorfastness of the IPS screen)?

No, but if you want to send me a picture or illustration, I can set it as a background and compare.

To find a suitable picture was indeed hard (I wonder why  :) ), but here we go:

EDIT: And here one more: [img=http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/1158/2461920lg1.th.jpg] I guess I could have linked just something black, but I don´t think that´s the idea of the experiment :P

Got that image and opened both in Nero Photosnap viewer. The T60p image looks warmer and the T400 image has a cool cast to it. The white on the T60p image looks significantly brighter (both displays are at max brightness, on AC power, and both are set to max performance.

Personally, I've never seen a screen backlit with white LEDs that I've liked. (Never seen an RGB LED screen in person). Compared to the IPS panel in my school-supplied HP TC4400, the WUXGA CCFL screen in my W500 is pretty good, with the exception of viewing angles. Personally, I've found CCFL screens have more accurate color than white LED (better white point), as well as appearing richer and less harsh. They seem to have more character to the images. The LED backlit ones I've seen are great for black-on-white text, but not so good at pictures. I'll try to remember to take a few pics of my W500 screen soon.
