T61 TOUCH PAD AND USB MOUSE FREEZE (SAFE MODE OK)[solved]

#1 Post by cwc » Sat Jan 24, 2009 12:15 am

[solved] reinstalled windows
i've had a Lenovo T61 for 3 months now.
Centrino with 1 gig of RAM.
I run Maya, 3ds Max, Notepad++, and Filzilla. Oh ya Chrome
The mouse and touchpad freezes when I try to open an application
control-alt-delete will not work unless I'm in safe mode.
It is a company laptop that has Novell installed. I usually use in th work station mode.
I need to get my files off of it. And I'd like to try a fix so the Tech Department
doesn't have it for a month
I've tried to restore back to previous setting. NO LUCK.
Safe mode works. So I'm having trouble with virus scans.
Safe mode with networking freezes.

Any ideas. I 'm more of a Mac, Linux, Server 2003 guy :(

Try downloading a copy of PC Doctor from IBM to determine whether you have a hardware problem.

Welcome to forum! What OS have you installed? Does this behavior occur with every program you try to open or only with the ones you mentioned? What Anti-Virus do you have?

Install Process Explorer from Sysinternals, install HijackThis from TrendMicro and post screenshot of the first one and a scan log of the second one.

If you have any mouse software besides the default XP driver installed, remove it.

I just reloaded XP on a 2nd partition on my system and noticed the same problem. After checking my event logs it appears that Synaptics Enhanced mouse was crashing, thus taking the driver with it. So I uninstalled the synaptics package (which I could never really figure out what it does, since the mouse driver is built in anyways) and rebooted. I then used the system for about 3 hours straight with no problems.

BTW, you can save screenshots in .jpg as well to avoid big image sizes ;) (in Paint change the format to save in). I´ll have a look at both things.

It would be more helpful to the post a screenshot of your processes in normal mode, not in safe mode, because I need to see what is all loaded in normal mode in order to track down the problem you are experiencing (since you work in normal mode not in safe mode, right?). The same actually applies to HijackThis as well. :) And it would have made things easier if you didn´t run anything else (including AV).

I haven´t found anything suspicious in the HijackThis log... The screenshot of Process Explorer doesn´t have much to say anyway unless you manage to run it normal mode. From what I see in the Hijackthis log, there might be some software conflict that causes the mouse freezing...

Try disabling the wireless adapter in the BIOS.

I´m curios as to if the OP issues have something to do with the networking. He has Novell installed which probably messes with everything... and also said that "Safe Mode with networking doesn´t work" (I understand it like that the OP experiences the mouse freezing issues if he boots into safe mode with networking enabled).

The laptop does not work unless it is in the safe mode without networking.

I'll try to disable the wireless and the ethernet.
And see if that works.

Thanks for all the help.

by the way (What is a OP issue?)

What do you mean by "does not work"? It cannot boot into normal mode or there is no chance to make touchpad work in normal mode, so normal mode is basically useless or what? If you want us to help you, please try to be more specific and to provide some more information. In your first post you mention that you have only 4-5 programs installed which is obviously not the case judging by the HijackThis log...

How did your touchpad, usb mouse start freezing? Did you install anything? Anything else worth mentioning?... :)

EDIT: The OP is you ;) (OP=original poster)

Woops. The computer does works but if freezes the first time I click the desktop with a USB mouse or the TOUCH PAD after a normal boot. It hangs on "network drives can not be accessed". (possibly)

Does the trackpoint work (the little red thing on your keyboard)?

Yes. All the buttons work. BUT, only in safe mode.

Ah, ok, my hope was that unlike the touchpad, trackpoint and trackpad would work in normal mode...

Well, then it´s probably some issue with the Novell software. Did you try disabling networking from BIOS and then booting into normal mode to see if you still experience the same freezes?

What Lenovo software do you have installed on your ThinkPad? Try uninstalling synaptics and reboot to check it the trackpoint or usb mouse work in normal mode. If not, uninstall Access Connections (if you have it installed) and reboot to check that too.

I really think it is trying to connect to a network server.

So, you mean the issue might just be some improper setting in Novell or even a bug?...

I don't know, but I would disable one or both (wired or wireless) in BIOS and try like that.

I believe the OP has already tried this out - to no avail...
