T61 keeps reboot when shutdown is clicked.

Hi everyone. I have a T61 model 7659-12G.

It comes with Windows Vista Business. Every time I click the start button, then right arrow and click shut down, the system reboots instead of shutting down.

I can only shutdown the laptop if i keep hold of the power button.

What should I do? Please help if you can.

Kindest Regards

My wife told me her machine was doing that last night also. I went over and clicked shut down during one of the reboots and it shut down. I did not witness the cycles though..

It has been discussed before here (though without a satisfying resolution): http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=71366
Maybe it's more widespread and a google search might yield a solution.

I believe there is a simple solution: Open Power Manager -> Manage Settings -> Global Power Settings -> Choose your preferred setting for the start menu power button. I use an older version of Power Manager, so things may look a little bit different, but basically the idea is the same.

Hope this helps

Thanks guys but I now think it may be a hardware fault. as now even when i press the power button to switch it off the T61 cycles backup. :(

I have taken out the memory and reseated it and i still have the same problem.

I even took out the hard drive and still no joy.

I think the laptop has a mail in or carry in warranty which expires in 2010

Has anyone gone through the warranty process before? if so any advise?

Kindest Regards

Did you try to change the settings in the Power Manager?

Hi Merlin

No, I got desperate and reinstalled a fresh copy of vista business. Should I install it and then change the settings?

Cheers

There are occasional glitches with the EasyServe process. You hear about all the problems on this board but you don't hear about the successes. I've had two major mail-in repairs done on my computers (mobo replacement and LCD replacement) and the workmanship was flawless.

Call IBM/Lenovo Tech Support and get it fixed.

Oh, ok. Before you have installed anything, just go to Control Panel -> Power Options -> Choose what the power buttons do (in the left pane). From within the new window you will be able to adjust these settings.

Panic don´t help resolving any issues!

EDIT: Just a thought Per default, Vista start menu power button doesn´t shut down the system.

EDIT2: I corrected the last EDIT according to GACrabill`s post.

To make things a little bit clearer: If you have Lenovo Power Manager installed, then try changing the settings the way I described first. If you don´t have Lenovo Power Manager installed (for example after the fresh reinstall of Vista), then try changing the settings in Vista Power Options the way I described in my last post.

Hope this helps

Go to Control Panel --> System --> Advanced tab --> Startup and Recovery ... click Settings button --> find System Failure box --> uncheck "Automatically restart" and "OK"

When you then "click the start button, then right arrow and click shut down" .... you will probably see a BSOD during the shutdown with your error message and maybe a module name.

Unfortunately, automatic restarts during failures are the default.

I don't believe that this is true.

On every Vista laptop that I have seen, the Vista start menu power button default is "Standby" (ie. Sleep) ...... I always change this to Shutdown.

True, I stand corrected! I had in mind that pre default it doesn´t shut down the machine, but you are right, the default is not reboot but going into standby.

Thanks
