package.zip rant

This is cross-posted at the "other" forum, but I've gotten no response. After my most recent run of the Updater I got into a situation where when I clicked on any of the menu choices in Multimedia Center for Think Offerings a Roxio installer would open, run for awhile and then ask for the .msi file for the software. In searching for the msi I found it buried in a zip file named package.zip.
The file is password protected! I eventually got around this by downloading the entire Multimedia Center installer from Lenovo. I installed it and everything is fine (for the moment). But my real question, and I guess this goes back to the software restore disk that came with my first Aptiva in 1996, is if this is my computer and my software licenses AND all the installers check for what the message box calls "Eligibility", why the [censored] password?
I can pre-empt the piracy answers with the eligibility and BIOS checks. If you're going to put a 278 MB file on my machine, I should be able to access it. A simple reinstall became a half-hour cleanup, download and reinstall issue. I hate when that happens.
