My new Ubuntu install - scrolling trouble in Opera

Hi
I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my T61.
For many years I've been a Slackware fan, having tried other distributions every now and then, always returning to Slackware.
For a while now, I've wanted a Linux environment at home and on the go, and virtualization just doesn't seem to work on this laptop. So, I bought a 2nd hard drive and ordered a thinbay drive caddy so I can boot off a Windows drive or Linux, as the need arises.
Thus far, I'm impressed by Ubuntu 8.10!
The wireless works! The sound seems to work! All without spending hours and hours fiddling! This is truly a first in my 10+ years Linux experience. As of yet, I've only heard the startup system sound, as I haven't had reason to really check it out and see if mp3's can play and whatnot. Nor have I tried printing, which is usually another major time/energy drain. But having wireless work "out of the box" is a major happiness! I was even able to set up VPN to my work, though I did have to google it and do some tweaks.
NOW.... the only quirk that's bugging me is the middle mouse button in my favorite browser, Opera. I'm accustomed to holding it down and using the trackpoint stick thing to scroll. I found a fix and put it in place, but if I don't do it slowly, it goes bonkers and my browser goes "back" rather than scroll correctly.
Anyone have any good known fixes to this eradic behavior?
Thanks!
