Solving the T60p fan buzz

#1 Post by Ivan Ivankovic » Fri Feb 20, 2009 4:54 am

Hello!

My Thinkpad T60p (2007-YLX) is almost two years old and although I clean it regulary (blowing the dust with compressed air) my fan is annoyingly loud. Performance mode for both AC and Battery is set to Balanced, not Maximum Performance and I see no reason for a fan to be so loud, so I think it must be the dust in or around the fan inside.
Has anyone tried cleaning that? I would lif the keyboard, gain access to the components and then use the compressed air to blow out the dust and put it all back.

Has anyone tried this? Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

I have experienced this same issue and it's resolution is very simple. Most likely it's a bit of debris stuck near the fan that is causing this. I am including a link to Lenovo Support where they list movies and tutorials on taking your ThinkPad apart to access various areas.

I don't think those videos cover the fan assembly, however, these ones do. Click the FRU Removal/Replacement tab and then play the videos in sequence.

Thanks for posting this link, I meant to include both (in case the OP had neither) the one I posted and this one, but got in a hurry and forgot this one....:)

The best way to clean the fan is to remove it and then blow dust with compressed air. There are some holes in the fan that you'll gain access to, only if you take it out, as you'll see - and there's a lot more dust inside than you can imagine. Remember that if you're taking your fan out (I've done this at least 5 times so far), be sure to reapply thermal grease - AS5 has been my absolute favorite so far - I reapply it on CPU, graphics and chipset every time I take the fan out.
