Hello,

I understand my new ThinkPad came with one 1GB RAM Module and one empty slot.

Can I put a 2 GB Module in the other slot without worrying about matching sizes?

Is the RAM Manufacturer critical?

Yes, you can put a 2 GB module in the other slot without worrying about sizes. No, the RAM manufacturer is not critical. However, please note that frequency and latencies should be the same. In general it is advised to use RAM kits to avoid potential problems. Also, I would recommend you to test the memory (you can use memtest86+ for that purpose) after the upgrade to make sure that the RAM you have purchased it not faulty and won´t cause you problems later.

I don't know what 'latency' means.

What I think I know is that I should buy one 2 GB chip.....DDR2 SDRAM / DDR2-667 / PC2-5300.

If I do this, will this give me the correct 'latency?'

To verify that the RAM you are going to buy has the same *latency* you can do following thing: download a small utility called cpu-z, run it, it will give you a nice overview of some basic hardware components (cpu, mainboard, memory), go to the memory tab and check the number CAS a.k.a. CL, in your case it could be only 4 or 5. Then go to the page with the specs of the RAM you want to purchase, there you should find something like CAS 5 or CL 5 (or resp. with 4). If those number and the number reported by cpu-z match, then you are good to go
