Acronis Trial version WON'T clone...right?
I just posted in another thread, but I thought this might be worthy of it's own thread.
I just downloaded the trial version of Acronis.
Burned a bootable CD.
Put a new drive in the computer.
Put the old drive in an external enclosure.
Selected "clone disc" and went through the steps... until the very last step.
When it came time to hit that last button: "clone!"... I get a warning that tells me that this is a trial version and only the purchased version can perform this task.
Hmmmm,... so is it possible to get an older version???
I'm guessing that they have disabled this cloning feature for the trial version.

Look on eBay at this V10: http://cgi.ebay.com/ACRONIS-TRUE-IMAGE- ... 0354517933
It's not the latest and greatest, but I'm using it and V happy with it.

Re: Acronis Trial version WON'T clone...right?
I'm attempting to use "Acronis Migrate Easy"... when clicking on the "trial download" it states that this is a "fully functional" version.
We'll see.
It is installing now.
Otherwise, the ebay find is really cool. Unfortunately, that adds to the wait!
The only reason I bought this new hard drive is because it was $60. Having to buy software to make this trick happen defeats the whole "bargain" part!
Anyway... I'm trying it again with migrate. Will update ya'll soon.

I hope it will work out for you. *Disclaimer*: I have never used Migrate Easy, so I can´t comment on its capabilities, there could be well other and better migrating free/shareware out there...

Re: Acronis Trial version WON'T clone...right?
Darn... Acronis Migrate gives the same warning.
So now, I have uninstalled/installed these two hard drives twice along with the software and burning the CD.
...and now, to put everything back the way it was so I can use the computer!
Back to the drawing board.
I have doubts about that link to the UK Acronis link, but I'll check into it... and it seems to require waiting for email confirmations and such.
And I thought this was supposed to go without a hitch!

Re: Acronis Trial version WON'T clone...right?
That about Migrate Easy is quite surprising now... Acronis should definitely pay more attention to what they claim about their shareware. I hope you have more luck with the free version...

Nope. The free version is "no longer available".
Guess I'll try googling!

So, while I search... assuming I find something...
Should I keep my partitions as they are on the original? ... or make them proportionally larger?
I am moving from an original 160g hard drive on my T61 running XP to a new Hitachi 320g 7200.

I would think you would want to leave them all the original size except the C:\ partition which should stretch out to use the whole disc.

right now, I'm looking at freeware HDclone.
Clonezilla looks a little cryptic/intimidating for me.
Man, I wish I were forewarned about Acronis!
This simple task has now turned into a real project!

I'm am downloading some software from Maxtor that they offer for migrating to their hard drives. Western Digital and Seagate offer their own software, too.
Are these options viable even though I have a Hitachi?

You can find the shareware Acronis True Image Home v10 at softonic for download.
Also, I sent you a PM.
EDIT: The link doesn´t really work. Acronis seems to have pulled out their TrueImage Home v10 from everywhere...

Re: Acronis Trial version WON'T clone...right?
If you have a PC with enough HD-space, why bother cloning?
With ANY trial version of Acronis TrueImage you can take an image of the laptop HD (using e.g. a USB enclosure), store it on your PC or other HD, then swap laptop-HD in the enclosure and restore the image onto the new hard disk.
You could also download this here: http://www.seagate.com/support/discwiza ... tup.en.exe
(which apparently only works if you have any old Seagate or Maxtor HD in your PC)

Re: Acronis Trial version WON'T clone...right?
I've only got 24 gigs left on my 160g hard drive.
Looking at this price of this disc cloning software.... and considering the time I'm spending on the issue (to say nothing of the time others are spending helping me!)... I wonder if I would be better off ordering one of those hard drives that actually *comes* with cloning software.
Acronis costs 40 (for "Migrate"). If I buy yet another hard drive, I'd have 640gigs in my notebook computer... more storage than I have in all my other computers combined!... then, I'd get the software an another hard drive for only $50.
Thanks to the help of others, I'm working on other solutions first.
Thanks for all of the help!

Re: Acronis Trial version WON'T clone...right?
That is true. The Seagate/Maxtor drive does not even have to be one of the drives that you are cloning. You can temporarily USB-attach an eligible drive just long enough to use the software to clone other makes of HDsRealBlackStuff wrote:(which apparently only works if you have any old Seagate or Maxtor HD in your PC)

Re: Acronis Trial version WON'T clone...right?
I actually did download the Maxtor & Western Digital software, and it immediately recognized that I did not have one of their hard drives.
It immediately directed me to the Acronis web site for the standard ($40) software.
For those of you installing a hard drive into your ultrabay just for storage... is it as simple as installing the hard drive and your done?...or do you need to make it into an extra partition?

Re: Acronis Trial version WON'T clone...right?
At least with Vista and Win 7 you don´t need to create a partition on it. You can use it as a storage right away. You may first have to format it in an appropriate file system though.Bfskinnerpunk wrote:For those of you installing a hard drive into your ultrabay just for storage... is it as simple as installing the hard drive and your done?...or do you need to make it into an extra partition?

Re: Acronis Trial version WON'T clone...right?
Thanks.
So, in conclusion, it seems that we no longer have the freebie option of merely downloading a trial version of Acronis for the job.
(for those of you just doing a search on this matter)

Re: Acronis Trial version WON'T clone...right?
That depends on which version of Acronis one wants to use. Acronis True Image v10 seems to be gone from all trusted download sources. Instead of it one can download the new v12. For those who might be interested in using v11, you can download an English language trial from here.Bfskinnerpunk wrote:So, in conclusion, it seems that we no longer have the freebie option of merely downloading a trial version of Acronis for the job.

Unfortunately, it seems that the free trial version of True Image doesn't clone from the bootable media disc but it does seem to do something with the new hard drive in a disc enclosure.

Re: Acronis Trial version WON'T clone...right?
People, think!
The Acronis program name is TrueImage, it's mainly made for taking images, not for cloning!
In the trial versions, you can image all you like, cloning is a (nice bonus) option after you have paid.
With all the time and effort that OP has (and we have) wasted, it would have been cheaper to buy direct from Acronis!
He already got his download, all he needed was the key (and perhaps the CD to follow by mail).
Acronis is saving our forum members' bacon almost on a daily basis!
EDIT: see http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=73494 for R-Drive Image
