Mushkin 8GB ram 1.5 volt versus Kingston's & Crucial's 1.8v

#1 Post by demossmd » Tue Feb 24, 2009 12:20 pm

I've googled and searched this forum and can't seem to find an answer, so here I go.

Newegg added a new product today. I've been waiting for prices to drop below $200 for 4GB sticks for my T61p. Newegg has had the Kingston for $315 for each 4GB stick and the Crucial for $265 for each 4GB stick. Both are 1.8 volts.

Now today, Mushkin is on the newegg website. They have TWO 4GB sticks (8GB total) for $369.99, yet they say 1.5 volts. Mushkin part number 996685.

Here's the manufacturer's product page:

My questions are:

1. Will the Mushkin work in my T61p? I'm fairly certain dual channel is supported, but not so sure about this lower voltage ram. I'm using a non-widescreen 14.1" T61p.

2. Will there be a performance difference between this and the higher voltage sticks?

Sorry I don't have an answer but I do have a suggestion. Mushkin has a great forum that is supported by some of the most knowledgeable people. I think a question over there may be helpful. That said, I too am interested in this solution since I've been monitoring newegg for the last several months, just like you.

The lower voltage sounds pretty fishy. Probably a typo. 1.5v is used for DDR3 usually,

I think they simply made a mistake in memory specs.
Anyway, there is no perfomance difference between this and any other PC2-5300 CL5 module.

I sent support at mushkin dot come an email outlining the question. I'll post back what they say (if they respond).

It was a typo. Mushkin responded first thing this morning and they've updated the specs on their website. However, Newegg is out of stock already. :(
