issues with xp3 on t61

#1 Post by gobo7 » Tue Mar 17, 2009 2:49 pm

i have a t61 ordered in november 08, put into service feb 09, winxp sp3.
about 20% of the time, it will not shut down on its own and you have to
hold the power button. occasionally it hangs on a sonic dla error. but
the rest of the time its just a blue screen with an active mouse pointer.

startup from initial login is slow, much slower than any other xp system i have.
i've removed all the norton bundled stuff. i've disabled startup of the following:
lenovo message center (amsg.exe), diskeeper, thinkvantage scheduler, tsscoreservice,
all the tvt backup stuff and cssauth.

and lastly, like others, more than half the time the wireless will not reconnect
to the same access point without running repair.

does anyone have any suggestions about alleviating any of these issues? several
other threads suggest a full reload of winxp, but since i've already put this
into service, it's not really an option.

thanks for any and all suggestions.

Many wireless problems were reported when XP3 was first introduced. Don't know what the cause was or what the solutions were but you should be able to search on this site and the Lenovo forum. The slow startup may be related to the wireless (polling) problem.

I just did install of XP and SP3 yesterday onto an R61, 15.4" with Intel graphics. The motherboards are practically identical to those on T61. The OS install came from factory disks, and XP3 was done after, followed by all critical and suggested windows updates. I then applied all critical and suggested IBM/Lenovo driver updates. I han no problems with installation, driver updates or with testing after.

I have had a similar problem with my wife's T61 which I traced to a windows XP update the came out last week, there were 3 updates, two of them went together, I don't remember the update numbers but one of them ended in 225. Tha problems I experienced were that wnen the computer woke from standby there was no internet connection. Access connectione would freeze and not run, I had to reboot to get it going properly and the computer was EXTREMELY slow even the processor was not doing anything.

I removed the updates and it works fine now as it did before. I did not install the updates into my T60p so I don't know if it would cause the same on my computer. I hope this helps you.

Have a good Day

I'm not sure about your other issues but I had an issue with slow startups bothering me. I spent hours upon hours uninstalling programs, running bootvis, and disabling services to get it to boot faster. It turned out to be the Roxio / Sonic services that were hanging the computer on startup. To disable them, you can either) go to the run menu, type msconfig and press enter. Go to the services tab and disable all the Roxio stuff. I have 5 things disabled.

I can definitely believe that. IMNSHO Sonic is the biggest piece of $#!t that ever found its way onto a PC. I had it on a work-issued laptop and every time I used it, Windows would hang on shutdown and I'd have to tell it to forcefully kill the Sonic process (don't remember the name, started with an M). Do yourself a favor, uninstall that garbage and get a decent CD burning package. I use a program called Ultra-ISO that is very lightweight but does almost everything I need in a disc burning software. I know Nero is the industry standard but I've heard that recent versions have picked up a lot of bloatware.

Just my 0.02, no affiliation with either company.

EDIT: just remembered the name of the process, it was mediahub.exe.

Yes, the slow shutdown/lockup on shutdown was a well known issue with the Sonic updater program (this started with the T40). The program was sgtray.exe, but this doesn't seem to be a problem any more, so I don't know what the deal is now.
