T60 goes off suddenly.

Hello,

Just received my T60 2007-AY6 last week from US.
It's refurnished 1 and still carries warranty.

Today I removed prebundled hdd and fixed my existing 160 gb hdd.
both HDD's are Hitachi make and both has 5400 RPM speed.

Problem is laptop suddenly goes off.
I am talking about 160 gb hdd which I used in my early T60 1953-DAU
I formatted system drive and installed Vista Ultimate. Laptop didnt reboot at all while Vista installation.
But after installation when I tried to rate my laptop it suddenly was off. It happened 4~5 times.
Now I fixed back preinstalled 60 gb hdd and laptop is running fine.

I tried to check Event logs. No HDD related error logs.
Also tried to repair Windows. But no luck.

Any hints?
I did Google and some people saying laptop fan problem but my laptop was on whole day today and no such thing happened. I am living in India and summer season started I agreed but weird behaviour of 160 gb HDD putting me in a puzzle.

Tommorow I am going to fix back 160 gb hdd and will put my laptop in cold server room to see results. But any 1 who had such problem can give hint?
Just hint even though if you never had this problem can be useful for me.

Hurrey!
After 3~4 hours of R & D it's solved now.
What I did is changed power scheme from "maximum Performance" to "Best Battery Performance" and now laptop is running smooth.
No more auto shut down problem.

It probably shutdown from a thermal overload on one of the motherboard sensors. Likely the GPU (graphics chip) IMO. A bad fan can cause this. There can be other causes as well. You can run a temperature monitoring utility to verify this. I believe NHC (notebook hardware control) can monitor several temperature sensors on the motherboard.

I think it's time for warranty service. You are supposed to be able to set it for performance.

Thanx to both of you.
As now now no problem as I switch to power saver option.

I shall install that monitoring tool.

In this laptop I will need Maximum Performance option as it has ATi Radeon graphics and need maximum speed for gaming.

But I want opinion from both of you >>

Laptop should not shut down in case if I switch to Maximum Performance although when temperature is 35 degree celcius outside and no Air conditioned ? I never had this problem in my earlier T60 thats why wondering but ofcourse in that laptop also I never went for Maximum Performance option.

Hello,

I sent my T60 to service center and they repalced CPU fan, Plannar, LCD cable.
Now I run that hardware monitor tool and CPU temp is around 55 degree celcius.
Still not so good. I have another DELL Vostro laptop of approx same config.
In that laptop CPU temp remains at 40 degree celcius in same environment in same temperature.

Shall I opt them to replace motherboard of my laptop? I havent tried to start many CPU intensive applications yet but I think my laptop might will turn off like earlier. CPU temp increasing once I start using more and more applications. I have formatted my laptop and installed Vista Ultimate with licensed anti virus with update. No way of virus I am sure on that.
Another DELL laptop I am talking about also had Windows Vista on it.

Any suggesions pls?

Oh is it ? I didn't know that. I only assembled several desktops thats why may be.

Hmm...So now I shall try fully using CPU intensive applications.

I am disappointed with them. While submitting laptop caps lock LID was not glowing, now glowing but now wireless LID is not glowing how ever wi-fi works. I had to travel all the way 14 km single way to do that repairy. I will go some other day to get that wi-fi LED repaired.


Just a doubt: Can this due to unbranded battery which I have fixed? It's brand new how ever and make is SANYO.

I don't see any problem with 55 deg. C. IMO, if you were around 80 deg. C you would be getting up there. Critical temp is 99 deg. C or above.

I suspect your GPU temps are what caused the shutdown. Your first screenshot doesn't show the GPU temp. As far as what THM0 and THM1 are actually referring to, I don't know. I haven't used NHC in some time. When I experienced shutdowns on my T42, it was a high GPU temp that caused the shutdown. The fan was bad in my case. It was turning, but not cooling properly. I was getting a GPU shutdown at 99 deg. C. My GPU temps were higher than my CPU temps.

I believe I was having thermal issues with my T60p (20078DU). I was experiencing occasional sudden shutdowns while running in max performance mode... After searching this forum I decided to clean the cooling area by removing the palm rest and keyoard, and using canned air, blowing out the dust. I also installed TP fan control and Notebook Harware Control... My temps have dropped significantly... at least 10C, probably more...

C&P from TP FC as I write this (max performance) TP Fan Control in 'smart mode,' default settings. Wifi and BT 'on.'
