New (to me) T60p: Should I extend the warranty?
New (to me) T60p: Should I extend the warranty?
I just picked up a T60p (2007-96U) with a 15" UXGA FlexView from eBay for $725. There were no pictures with the item description, so I took a gamble and it panned out: the unit is like-new. There are no marks on the keyboard, touchpad, etc. from use, and the 9-cell battery only had 7 cycles on it. The machine is under original depot warranty until 2009-08-23. Should I upgrade to the 5-year depot warranty and extend the warranty by another 2 years? I believe the correct P/N for the upgrade is 41C9180, which appears to be going for about $160 online. Any issues I should be aware of with these models?
Re: New (to me) T60p: Should I extend the warranty?
For $160, I would upgrade the warranty. The T60p had problems with heat - combination of poor fan/cooling system design and dirt/dust accumulation. This is in addition to the things that can go wrong with any 4-5 year old computer (LCD, motherboard, DVD drive, etc).

I just went thru the same purchase and decision. I paid the $160.
Re: New (to me) T60p: Should I extend the warranty?
Just to clarify. First T60 ever made just turned 3 in January (T60 were introduced in Jan 2006). If the warranty is valid until 2009-08-23 then this particular T60 is around 2.5 years old. A bit less than 4-5sktn77a wrote:This is in addition to the things that can go wrong with any 4-5 year old computer (LCD, motherboard, DVD drive, etc).
This and the fact that it wasn't used much means it shouldn't cause trouble. Still, if you can afford it, extend the warranty. You don't want to regret not doing it if something does happen.

Re: New (to me) T60p: Should I extend the warranty?
Sorry if I wasn't clear. I wasn't suggesting the computer was 4-5 years old now (I'm guessing it's about 2 years old) but when it is 4-5 years old, it will be nice to have that warm-and-fuzzy that if anything does crap out, it'll be covered!

Another vote for extending the warranty...if you're intent on keeping the machine, that is.

Re: New (to me) T60p: Should I extend the warranty?
Most of the stuff that could fail like HD, RAM, etc. isn't very expensive to replace by yourself. However there are two items that can fail and are very expensive to replace: the FlexView LCD and the motherboard. For $80/year it seems worth it.oaaltone wrote:Should I upgrade to the 5-year depot warranty and extend the warranty by another 2 years?... for about $160 online.
(When I bought my T60p I extended the warranty to 5 years without giving it much thought. I intend to keep that system as long as possible.)

Re: New (to me) T60p: Should I extend the warranty?
Congrats on picking up that fine machine.
For less than $7 per month, it's hard to argue with the warranty coverage - I mean just for peace of mind! However, if you'll be using it at home on a desk for forseeable future, it probably won't fail. If you plan on traveling with it, definitely get it.
A likely extra benefit would be a higher resale value and quicker sale if you do buy the coverage and decide to sell before the warranty expires.

See e.g. the thread Thoughts about Thinkpad Warranty Upgrades (41C9180) - and more specificly this post (perhaps not the most relevant one, in all details, but the one I found first with sufficient information!). Note that this thread points to Affinity Systems, Inc. which sell the two-year warranty extension with part-number 41C9180 that you are looking for for only $150.
Want more info? If so, search this forum for e.g. "warranty extension" or 41C9180.
Happy Easter!

No ext warranty here, but I've had no known issues with my machine bought ~ Thanksgiving 2006. It rarely leaves the house.

archer6, yes that is for 2 years. Here's the link I used -

When you speak to a Lenovo sales agent at 1-866-96-THINK, ask for a discounted price. It's not listed but they have the ability to do that.
