My T61 got 8GB memory

#1 Post by stkris » Wed Apr 08, 2009 5:42 am

Hi!

I see in this thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=49703 that the T61(p) can have 4GB memory. That is not the limit for all models atleast. My T61 model 6463 now has 8GB memory installed. And it is all available to my OS which is 64 bits Debian Linux.

Just wanted to let you know the limit is not 4. 8GB comes in handy when you run several virtual machines on your laptop. :D

If even more is possible with 8GB memory bricks I have no idea about... :wink:

Thanks for sharing your experience! The above sticky is actually referring to the hardware RAM limitations of T60(p) as well as the OS limitations, which apply to T61(p) and any other ThinkPads (and other brands too). I guess the sticky needs some update. At that time there weren´t any 4 GB modules available.

Regarding 8 GB of RAM, I believe you are far not the first forum member having installed and using 8 GBs of RAM. There are already threads on this in the X6x subforum as well as in this subforum. So, welcome to the 8 GBs club! :)

Cheers,

Marin

Great - thank you!

I did look around this forum when pondering about the upgrade. I did not find anything about 8GBs on a T61, but the ThinkWiki website and the Santa Rosa chipset specs gave me enough confidence to try. :)

In case you´d like to follow those threads, here what I could dig out:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=74905 -> for X61
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 2#p437552-> somewhat old, though the last post is from 9.Feb t.Y.

Cheers,

Thanks again, Marin - I guess I forgot to search for X61.
