Docking T60 but not quite docking

As the weather has gotten "moister" the incidence of users docking and their T60s shutting down has plummeted -- we also have been putting the wee little plastic footies on the docking stations.
However, what appears to still be an issue is that users (XP, SP3) hot dock and the docking station itself never recognizes them. They have to completely reboot in order to officially dock with all the bells & whistles.
Any ideas ? Forum searches didnt really pull up anyone else seeing this issue.
My first thought is to upgrade firmware
