I'm interested in using mine. Is it Firewire 400 or Firewire 800? Where can I get that info?

Recent ThinkPads that support Firewire ports implement the IEEE 1394a-2000 specification (Firewire 400)

And to answer the second question:
http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/tabook.pdf
Find the T61p listings and check the "Ports" description.

IEEE 1394 FireWire 400 (4-pin connector; 1394a-2000 standard) indeed. Thanks.
Do you know if this is much better than USB? I know, theoretically, USB should have better transfer speeds, but, in reality, does that happen?

I can't personally answer that question but if you submit a Google search, there's probably some data out there that will tell you. For example, this comes up as the first hit when looking for "firewire 400 vs usb 2.0 speed":

A while ago I bought an external 1TB drive with USB, Firewire and eSata ports (with the intentions of using the eSata connection). Since USB and Firewire cables were included I tested the drive with HD Tune on my T61p and I got the following results on average (approx. from memory):
USB: ~ 30MB/sec
Firewire (400): ~ 40MB/sec
eSATA2: ~ 96MB/sec

Nice. How do you link via eSATA? Express card?

Hi All,
You must remember, USB, Firewire & eSATA transmit data differently.
In theory eSATA is faster even using an expresscard, but it depends if you're sending one big file, or lots of little files.
I have an eSATA ExpressCard adaptor as well but I only use it to transfer big files like HD movies etc...
Hope this helps

The eSATA2 is a PCIe card installed in the Advanced Dock. I do have a PCMCIA eSATA card (only sata 1 speeds) and that gives around 60MB/sec in my T61p. In my T60p and A31p it is actually a little bit faster (around 72MB/sec if I remember correctly). But I rarely use that card.
