ibm thinkpad t60 dead ?

#1 Post by splintercell » Sat May 23, 2009 5:58 am

:( :| so i got this laptop from a classmate the laptop comes from a store attic for like ~ 1,5/2 years i guess

now that i have the laptop when i plug the adapter in (because the battrey is drained of course after 1,5+ years) i get no led no power nothing !.. the adapter is an original lenovo adapter 20V/4.5A

i took the whole laptop apart and noticed a little bit of Oxidation (by the proc cooling unit) and around the vid chip and under the pcmcia slot further from that its almost a new motherboard it seems.. i cleaned every single part (in hope that it would work) so build it back together and :( still nothing no leds on the laptop that indicates that its charging or anything just a dead response..

i cant figure it out :(.. i checked the adapter too witch a special screwdriver (when it gets power from source a led will turn on) it led a little..so i guess i dont know any more..

any ideas ? anything would help :) pls help the beautiful T60 :) model: 2007 Wu4

Welcome to the Forum!
Disconnect the AC adapter and take the battery out. Take the palm rest (keyboard bezel) front and the keyboard off again.
Remove the modem/bluetooth/wifi/NIC etc. cards from under the keyboard.
Remove both RAM modules from under the palmrest. Remove the hard disk and CD/DVD drive.
Reconnect the keyboard again.
If you have a voltmeter, check the round barrel connector of the AC adapter. Middle pin is the Plus. Check if you get 20V.
Plug in only the AC adapter and power on with the keyboard button.
If anything still works, you should hear the fan spinning up, and a series of beeps: 1-3-3-1.
If the fan doesn't spin up, blow into it from the top to see if it turns freely. If not, remove and clean.
The beeping is the standard signal that there is no RAM in it.
Let us know if any of the above works.

Check if your machine is still under warranty:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... OOK-WARNTY
Fill in the type 2007 and the serial number looking like 99-ABCDE from the bottom of the T60.
Then hit the Continue button
If it still is, send it in for warranty repair.

Check if you have Accidental protection.
Corrosion from storage (if they find that) may perhaps also count as an accident.

As long as the system was reassembled according to the procedure in the Hardware Maintenance Manual you should be OK. Many parts of a ThinkPad are considered "customer replaceable" so a system that has been opened by the customer is nothing unusual to Lenovo.

From Lenovo? - Probably $600-$800! But you may be able to find one on e-bay or here the marketplace for much less than that. Unfortunately, the motherboard is the major (expensive) component in a laptop.

Wat ga je doen met de rest?
Voor een redelijke prijs wil ik dat best wel hebben!

(translation for non-Dutch speakers: what are you going to do with the rest? For a reasonable price I'd be interested!)
