I've got a T60p, 2007-WLY. Pretty much a fresh install of Win7 RC1 with the latest drivers from Lenovo's site.

Machine is powering down when running the experience test, in the DX9 Aero part of the test. Sometimes the battery and AC adapter need to be disconnected before it'll power back up.

CPU temp last crash was 67 C, but I have no idea what GPU temperature was.

Any idea what's going on here? If it's a Win7 issue, I definitely don't mind falling back to XP. If it's a hardware issue, I checked, the machine is still in warranty for the next 2.5 months, although it's depot only, no ThinkPad Protection, and I know better than to send a machine into Solectron without TPP, so I might contact the seller.

Never mind, grabbed TPFanControl, and GPU temperature was WELL over 110 C when running a 3D app that crashed it, and it was over 105 C idling before starting TPFanControl. Oh, and the air coming out of the vent was suspiciously cool.

There are signs that it's had a motherboard replacement (there's a new Ethernet MAC address sticker over top of an original,) so I'm guessing some Solectron parts changer (I refuse to say technician) messed up the heatsink install.

And, I decided to pull the heatsink to see what went wrong.

I think Lenovo will be getting a call from me...

That makes me angry seeing that photo. What kind of moron just bends a heatpipe to get it out of the way.

Any feedback on Win7 RC1 on these laptops? How well does it manage the radios? I'd love to dump access connections!

It wasn't bent to get it out of the way, that's the normal routing. I'm not sure what happened, my guess is the parts monkey dropped it.

What the issue is, is that... the GPU is completely uncovered. It's the WRONG HEATSINK! (It's one for an integrated graphics machine.)

Anyway, it's sitting at the closest Lenovo authorized warranty service center's location, awaiting parts and my power adapter (I'm used to the "remove everything" method, not the "include everything" method, and didn't grab a power adapter before I left.)

I've not messed around much with the radio stuff in Win7, myself, although I didn't install Access Connections. It does seem to be better than XP's WZC, but like I said, I didn't mess around with it much - this GPU issue reared its ugly head before I had much of a chance to experiment.

And, built-in fingerprint stuff, too. Which is good, because I couldn't get Client Security Solution to install (which I don't really care about, but I have heard you can edit the MSI and it'll work,) and the Lenovo fingerprint stuff wouldn't recognize the fingerprint reader until CSS was installed. So, I'm using the Lenovo stuff basically for the drivers, and letting Win7's fingerprint stuff do the rest.

Lenovo won't make that kind of mistake. And they may reject your claim as the heatsink is not the original part for T60p (the ATI chip still has some trace of thermal Compounds left, so it is obvious that the heatsink has been replaced). Since you bought this machine 2nd hand (from your 1st post), you should query the seller immediately.

You don't need CSS to make Lenovo fingerprint stuff work. You simply need driver for fingerprint reader and ThinkVantage Fingerprint Software.

I had been doing some googling, and that's what it was indicating to me. The fingerprint software was saying the fingerprint reader wasn't recognized.

Unfortunately, I know the seller is a reseller, so my guess is, they won't know the machine's history. They had 27 of them when I bought mine, so it was probably a corporate deployment that they bought or something.

I'll almost certainly know Monday whether the claim was handled, the authorized warranty service center that I took it to was supposed to decide yesterday whether to order the part.

The motherboard has definitely been replaced, there's a second ethernet MAC address sticker on the bottom of the machine. I've seen worse mistakes than the wrong part being installed done by Solectron/Flextronics parts monkeys (and the machine has depot service,) and I've gotten a wrong part when getting warranty parts from Lenovo before. (Granted, the wrong part was a bezel for a CTO configuration of an X61t, where the correct part was an optional upgrade on the same type-model (fingerprint,) whereas the integrated graphics T60s have a completely different type number. The on-site tech that was there caught the problem, and ordered the correct part from Lenovo, but it was still annoying.)
