LCD replacement on T60 nightmare

#1 Post by ronli_84 » Tue Jun 16, 2009 11:58 pm

Hi,

I have recently purchased a SXGA+ LCD panel to replace my old panel.
Everything seems to have gone smoothly and I was able to boot up with the LCD and see the initial Lenovo screen.

However, my nightmare began when I discovered that the XP boot up logo was missing during the boot up.
Having a blank screen for a minute or so, I was finally able to see some image within XP and see my desktop.

However, I restarted my computer and tried to go to the BIOS screen, it gave me a blank screen. No matter how long I waited, there still no image. Inserting an XP installation disc also doesnt show me the message "press any key to boot from cd..."

It seems with the replacement LCD, all DOS related screen are giving me a blank screen.
Is there any way to fix this issue? Any help will be greatly greatly appreciated.

Ron

Have you tried hooking it up to an external monitor?

Also try hitting fn+f7 so change between internal and external displays.

Let us know what happens.

Hi Temetka
Thank you for taking the time to reply my post.

For the Fn+F7 command, do I need to enter it inside XP or doing the bootup sequence?

Fn-F7 works anytime so no you don't need to be in Windows. It is a hardware feature.

If your external monitor works fine, then it could be your EID for the LCD. There are someways to set it.

Or it could be the backlight / inervter also. See the LCD closely and see if you see any ghost image , they would show up even if the LCD is not lit, try to see it at 180 degree angle in a brightly lit room.

I was also suspecting the issue was caused the EID of the panel previously. However from what I have read, with an invalid EID, the panel will only display a bunch of color lines, but not actual images.

Is there a case where an invalid EID blocking images from the panel in DOS, but it will be ok inside Windows?

The following is what I observe right now:

1.) Lenovo logo shows
2.) Blank screen for 1 minute or so
3.) Finger print prompt show and xp continues to display the desktop. Everything is normal inside Windows (resolution color brightness etc)

If after the lenovo logo, I try to go to the BIOS screen, it will show a blank screen. If I put in a XP installation disc, it will not show the line "press any key to boot from CD". It will continue to go to the finger print prompt after a few mintues.

What was the source for the SXGA+ panel? What panel did you have previously? What graphics card do you have (although this shouldn't affect anything)?
Current: 365XD (120 MHz, 72 MiB, 6.4 GB, 4x CD-ROM, 10.4" TFT)
Past: T61p 15.0" QXGA, T60p 15.0" QXGA, X61 Tablet SXGA+, R51e 14.1" XGA, X21

Hi, here is the info of my previous (old) panel:
P/N 13N7058
FRU 13N7059
LTN141P4-L02 (Samsung)

I bought the new panel from ebay, here is the link to the item:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... AQ:US:1123
I forgot to copy the info of the new panel, it is currently inside the brezel.
I have to reopen it to get the further info.

Both panel is SXGA+. My graphics card is x1400.

HI,
I am service tech from http://www.blisscomputers.net i was talking to ronli_84 by email also . he suggested me to check out the forum. i am the one who spent time with IBM also. some how while doing some research i found IBM used some LCDs with EDID chip in which LCD saves motherboard information in chip so any other LCD which is installed might work strangly but i dont understand why he has issues while he is on bios. I will any how contact him by email. but any of users knows they can email me also. As this very strange issue we are facing here. i have dealt tons of RMA but this unique case.

Thanks
Dave.

hi all,

Just want to update my findings so far.

I was able to attach an external display and view the BIOS page through it by pressing Fn + F7.
Switching back to the internal panel result in a blank screen as before.

After messing around with the settings, I finally found a temporary solution.
It seems if I disable the "H/V Expansion" setting in the BIOS, I am able to view all the DOS screens as a small image at the centre of the screen (i suspect the default resolution is 640*480). If I enable the setting back, I will get a blank screen back.

I can live with this setting as it doesnt affect my everyday tasks. I will be great however if someone can point out why this is happening.

I would note your BIOS settings and then load the default BIOS settings.

I did try loading the default setting in BIOS. but it will still result in the blank screen scenario, as it will set the H/V Expansion setting back to enable
