What to upgrade from T60?
What to upgrade from T60?
I have a T60 2623-D6U which I bought in June 06 and have used almost 24/7 the past 3 years. It has been serviced a few times for new LCD, fan, etc.
I'm sending it for the last service this week to replace the fan which has been very loud and makes the computer overheated often.
I'm thinking of upgrading to a new machine and have been looking at the T line again since I know there is nothing out there as reliable as it.
My requirement would be a 14" SXGA+ screen like my current one. I don't watch movie so widescreen is of no use.
What would everyone suggest? T61, T400, T500? How well built are the new machines?

Andy,
I am afraid if you need SXGA+ your only option will be a 14" T61.

Hi Brad,
You are still using a T43p?
I hope the new service will get my T60 some more life so I can buy time and wait for new model (is there anything coming out soon)?
I haven't checked up on TP forum the past several years since I got my T60. I got a T42 prior to it so I'm spoiled somewhat.

Re: What to upgrade from T60?
I say keep what you got because a T61 or T400/T500 isn't a huge upgrade performance wise if you're doing Office/Internet type stuff. A faster hard drive will give a bigger performance boost for day to day stuff.

The T60 serve you well of a couple of years more. Consider extending the warranty to 5 years, just in case more issues big and small develop down the road, and you should be all set.

Re: What to upgrade from T60?
Andy,
I am using a 15" UXGA T60p. I have other newer widescreens but am always disappointed with the LCD's when I use them. I like the speed and power of my T400 with the T9600 CPU. It does run cooler too than my V5250 T60p.
The T60p I have been using for the last 10 days with V5200 graphics appears to run at least 30-40 degrees F cooler that the V5250 T60p that I am rebuilding.
I agree that your best option may be to simply stick with what you have.

I may take that route. Sounds like a smart investment decision. Any link to extend warranty?dr_st wrote:The T60 serve you well of a couple of years more. Consider extending the warranty to 5 years, just in case more issues big and small develop down the road, and you should be all set.

Re: What to upgrade from T60?
I thought I'll keep everyone updated.
I created a service ticket for my T60 the day before the warranty ran out. IBM then sent out the box 3 times because they sent it to the wrong building the first 2 times. Everytime time they sent a new box, they changed my service ticket number.
I couldn't get around to send it in until July 21 or so. The service status page said "On Hold. Contact consumer for more info" for few days until I called them. They told me it's on hold because it's billable service.
It turned out the 3rd ticket number was issued after my warranty expired due to the box shipping snafu. I explained the story and they told me they will call me back. Got call later, told everything is cool, being fixed and will be shipped.
Got the machine back the next day to my surprise.
I need to give credit to IBM Thinkpad support. They are the best when they got it right. Everything is first class.
They replaced the CPU fan, a new bezel, new keyboard for me. I sent in the AC adapter but they returned it back saying it's customer replaceable item.
Consider what they have fixed, I wouldn't complain to much about the AC adapter.
I then went online and bought some cheap one which I got the next day since the seller is in NYC as well. Turned out i got the 65W, mine should be 90W. It got really hot so I need to get the right one soon.
This is the short story. Since I sent in my T60, I ordered the Ideapad S12 for my mom which I used the past week or so. I came to appreciate the light weight and bright screen of S12. Now I got my T60 back, I realize how heavy it is because I carry it around the house a lot.
Looks like this is a happy ending and I hope to get a few more years out of my T60. It more than paid off the price tag the past 3 years.

Re: What to upgrade from T60?
Sorry to bump an old thread, but I would be really grateful if you could let us know if the upgrade from V5200 to V5250 was worth doing. How much better is the performance? I'll be using mine for 3D graphics work but it comes with the V5200.Brad wrote:Andy,

(30 - 40 degrees cooler though?....that's a pretty big difference!)

Can I simply swap out my T5500 CPU in my 1953CTO T60 with a T5600? Or my T2400 core duo in my 2623D6U T60?
