ThinkPad T60 WiFi card hangs

I have a T60 with Intel Pro 3495ABG wireless LAN controller. I am experiencing a serious problem with it. After I power the computer on, the WiFi works fine for some time (sometimes for half an hour, sometimes for several hours). Then everything WiFi-related freezes:
* There is no more network connectivity at all.
* Connecting to any wireless network is not possible.
* Any operation on the WiFi card takes several minutes (displaying properties, turning off, etc).
* Any operation that has anything to do with networking takes several minutes (for example, when I open "Save As..." dialog in any application, it freezes for several minutes, as does navigating to any folder with Windows Explorer).
The only remedy is to turn the cmputer off and on again. Going to standby is not a good option, because the computer then takes ages to go back (probably again tries to do something with the network).
I thought it might be firewall-related, so I uninstalled my Symantec firewall. But it did not help. I have searched the Internet and various forums to no avail. I would really appreciate if someone pointed me to any directiion on this issue.
