Sprint Mobile Broadband with Access Connections?

hello all,
i recently purchased a sprint mobile broadband express card for my t61. it is a merlin ex720 by novatel wireless. included with the card was a cd containing sprint's software. however, i'm usually hesitant to install any additional software on my machine. for that reason, i was hoping to be able to use access connections to control the card.

is this possible? does it require me to whitelist the device in the bios? i'm hoping it is as simple as downloading an access connections update. i should be so lucky!

if anybody has any tips or howto's, i would appreciate it.
