What upgrade do you recommended for a T60 Type:1951-A47

Hi Friends!

I have just found your forum and want to wish all the best for everyone! The amount of knowledge that you collected on this forum is more than amazing. :thumbs-UP:

I found your forum because I also need some advice on my T60.
I have a company laptop.
It is a T60 (1951-A47)
The capacity of the was enough when I received it (January, 2006), but since then we had to install a lot of new solutions which get my laptop slower and slower.
The last installation was Lotus Notes 8.0. After I installed it the whole system became slower than you could imagine.

As I will able to buy my machine at the end of this year I thought that an upgrade would be fine for me.

So my question is that what upgrade do you recommend for me?

I want to start with the processor, but don't really know what processors are compatible with my machine.
Then I will change the HDD.
Regarding to the memory, I don't know whether it makes sense to change them or not.

Any recommendation is welcome!
Here are the details about my T60:

Thank you for your help in advance!

Best Regards!

If you're running XP, 2GB of memory should be more than sufficient.

I'd start with the hard drive, then do the CPU if you like. It's much less invasive and probably will speed things up more so than the CPU. Most tasks and I've not used Lotus notes, so I can't comment on it specifically, are not very CPU intensive. The hard drive tends to be the bottleneck as the machine waits for data to be read from the drive. A faster 7200RPM hard drive along with a re-installation of XP should help make things more snappy.

If at some point you want to upgrade the CPU you certainly can. Your T60 should support up to a T7600 Merom Core 2 Duo. The Yonah CPUs are pretty cheap on eBay. I'd probably say the T7200 probably is the sweet spot and they can be had on eBay for less than $100 if you're patient, though any dual core CPU will be a significant upgrade from what you've got now. Good Luck.

If your 1951-A47 still has the original 60GB 7200rpm hard drive, and you don't need a larger hard drive for other reasons, then the T7200 CPU upgrade would be the upgrade that I would make.

Ok guys. I will take into consideration the T7200 CPU upgrade then.

One more question.

My current processor T1300 has 32bit instruction Set.
The 7200 has 64bit instruction set.

Could be a problem?

You'll probably need to upgrade the BIOS. Some of the very early T60 can't do the Core 2 Duo. You'll need a revision 3 motherboard. You can use CPU-Z to see which version you have. Most likely you're good, but it's not 100%. If for some reason you're not good you could upgrade the motherboard or consider some of the Yonah Core Duo CPU, which are still very good CPUs and an upgrade over what you've got now. Good Luck.

I run Notes 8 on a couple of ThinkPads with roughly the same speed and memory as your T60 with no performance problems. Notes uses about 100MB of RAM, but if you have 2GB that shouldn't be an issue.
