A friend of mine is planning to buy an T61p (6457-W8G).

The T61p (6457-W8G) currently has a Core2Duo T7300 (2.0GHz)

My friend wants to replace the T7300 with an T9300.

The T9300 is this one i think http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/171888/i ... l#tab:info

Is this going to work?

The seller says he has bought the system on the 25th of february 2008

I entered the 7 part typenumber on the lenovo support site, and browsed to the system components, i found this:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-68229

It gives me 4 possible options for the mainboard (i searched for 6457 on that page) :
  • 42W7652
  • 42W7876
  • 42W7653
  • 42W7877
(And another question, is it possible to upgrade the warranty on this machine? It has one year remaining, but he wants to upgrade it. If this is possible, how do you do that? We live in Europe)

Just to echo the title post....

Is it possible to replace Txxxx dual core with Core2 Quad Mobile Processor Q9000 ? Or the limit is just T9600?
Does the T61p motherboard support also Quad processors ?

Yes, it does support the T9300 and T9500. I don't know about the Netherlands, but here in the US, Lenovo will not look kindly in terms of your warranty in replacing the CPU. Besides it will only be beneficial if you plan to use your CPU running at 100% all the time. If you're just doing Office and Internet there will be little to no performance increase.

As far as I know the T61p does not support the Quad. Even if it did your T61p is not designed to deal with the extra heat the Quad brings to the table.

There are several previous posts on this. Do a search (I'm on dial-up so I can't do it). The early T61p motherboards did not support the T9300 but the later ones (around the time yours was made) did.

Edit (7/15/09): Here you go:

If your motherboard is a 42W7652 or 7653, you'll get a thermal sensor error. If it's a 7876 or 7877, you should be OK.
