For a year or two, my T60 would often fail to boot after a re-start was called for by MS Update or some other reason. It would hang on a black screen with the fan running moderately high.
I would be forced to push the power button to re-start. This gave me the "windows did not start normally, yada-yada" message.
After dedicating the whole day to swapping this and that drive, and turning off this and that thing in the BIOS, I finally did a last ditch reset of the entire BIOS to default.
Then, I had to set the drive to compatability rather than AHCI to prevent the usual blue screen, and also turned off the awful ding in the power change menu.
This was my final try at fixing the machine before I sent it to "ThinkPad heaven".
Success!
I guess somewhere along the road (I do a lot of experimenting) I mis-set something in the BIOS, and returning to default took care of that.
Just a little troubleshooting tip for other users...
Reset the BIOS: now I love my T60 again!
