query of extending warranty

#1 Post by EricRC » Sun Jul 26, 2009 9:39 am

Hi,

I have a T60p. It originally came with a 3Yr onsite warranty and the warranty is going to expire in Late August, and I'm planing to extend it. Here is my query: Is a 2Yr Warranty the maximum warranty period I can extend for this laptop or can I extend the warranty endlessly?

Thank you
Eric

You can extend it another (2) years maximum, that's it. The warranty you purchase will actually be called a (5) year Warranty Service Upgrade (WSU), but again that is (5) years in total from date of purchase. So, if you originally had a 3 year depot warranty, and you want to continue with the depot coverage for another (2) years, you'd purchase the 3yr to 5yr depot WSU.

Also when you extend, I believe it'll have to be the onsite warranty that you currently have... you're not allowed to switch down to EzServe warranty even for the extentions.

Indeed you seem to be right. The page of warranty extensionsonly lists onsite upgrades for onsite base warranties.

I was in the same boat, warranty soon to expired.

One thing that I learned, is after you find the part number from the warranty extension list, and then google it, because there are several third parties that are selling the warranty at a discounted price.

So I have a 2757 which has a 1 year depot warranty and bought 41C9170, which upgrades that to 3 year depot warranty, so basically it adds 2 more years. I bought this through a 3rd party vendor, where I had to provide my machine and serial number so they can give it to lenovo to complete the transaction.

Scary thing is, I found quite a variation of warranty prices, i.e. few hundred dollars on the price of warranty depending on who you purchased from, so it's worth doing the comparison shopping.

Also this allowed me to price shop, so I can see the difference between adding 2 years (3 year warranty) vs 4 years ( for 5 year warranty), and decide on if the extra years are worth it or not. For me I went with the 3 year because the 5 year was 4 times more expensive, and I usually upgrade machines around the 3 year mark, and if I keep the machine, I find that I can get used parts rather cheaply off ebay and perform the service work myself.
