T61p: Retrofit the webcam?

#1 Post by hellosailor » Wed Aug 19, 2009 5:18 pm

What would be involved in retrofitting the Lenono webcam into a T61p that was ordered without one? Just buying the wecam & a new bezel? Or, cabling and other bits as well?

Anyone who's done this and has a parts list?

First thing to do would be to download and study the T61p hardware maintenance manual. It should tell you which parts are different and what FRUs they have.

Here's the manual:

EDIT:
But wait a minute. I don't see anything about a camera in the manual. Were there any T61/p models with integrated camera at all? Wasn't this feature introduced in T400/T500?

Yak, I actually had a devil of a time ordering a T61P without the webcam in the bundle. Had to pare down what costs I could, and at that time, I just had no planned needs for a webcam.

Thanks for the URL to the manual.

I did some more searching and came to odd results.

From what can be found on lenovo.com, only the 14.1" widescreen T61 was available with an integrated camera. Check these links:
14.1 inch WXGA+ TFT (1440x900) LCD service parts - ThinkPad T61, R61, R61i 14.1inch widescreen
LCD service parts - ThinkPad T61, T61p (6457, 6458, 6459, 6460, 6461, 6462, 6463, 6464, 6465, 6466, 6467, 6468, 6470, 6471)

From the first one it is clear that models with camera use a different LCD cable, LCD bezel and have the camera module itself.

The second one, for 15.4" T61, doesn't even mention camera.

This is confirmed by the HMMs. The one for 15.4" models I linked above has no mention of camera. This one, for 14.1" widescreen models, has:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67760

Was there no T61/p 15.4" models with integrated camera then?

Someone with more knowledge about T61, please help us out here.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I was wondering if it's possible to upgrade a non webcamera SXGA+ T61 to a webcamera SXGA+ T61...

Based on yoiur signature, I'm going to say "no". There are no 4:3 webcam parts
